HDMI audio question

I just noticed that my HDTV, which has HDMI, has an optical audio out. I run my DVD audio straight to HTR. Any reason to run it from TV out to HTR, and I assume get the HDMI fed into the TV into the HTR.....or will this just degrade sound?

I'm a firm believer in the less connections, the better.

Any time you introduce a mechanical connection in an electrical circuit there is the possibility of degradation in the signal.

Then there's the conversion to consider, HDMI to optical, inside a component that is not designed for superior audio reproduction; the TV.

I'd leave it like it is, but you can always try it and see if you notice a difference.
Who knows maybe it will sound ok, and if it doesn't, you can always revert to your original setup.

The HTR ought to get everything, digital connection if possible (sounds like you're good to go with HDMI) then it treats the TV as a monitor only. No sense in passing things back and forth and introducing more conversions.

I'm not sure but, it may be so you can run multiple HDMIs to your TV then use the optical out to your AVR. I have 2 HDMI on my tv and one optical out. So maybe it's to avoid 2 opticals?

I just go from HDbox to tv via HDMI and optical to AVR and DVD via HDMI and digcoax.

One interesting point I've noticed on the HDMI to TV connection, Closed Caption on the TV will not work with my HDMI connection (hooked direct from the cable box), however, it will work using the analog cables on another TV source setting. Is closed caption limited to use in analog cables.

Amen brother!! simpler is more better run the audio straight to the HTR !

Less connections less noise , less possibilities of something going bad!

The optical output on the TV is for if you are using the built in ATSC tuner and want to output the 5.1 audio from HD broadcasts thru your AVR.
