What do you guys think? My tax refund just hit the bank account today and I found these. Could be destiny.:D I emailed the guy my address to get me an exact shipping quote.

    They look mint...too bad you cannot do a local pick-up. $220 for shipping is not cheap.

    It says in his ad he puts the maximum shipping total to ship anywhere and to email him with your zip to get you a shipping quote. Thats what I did. I am hoping it will be much cheaper. I will not pay that much for shipping. I don't see how it would be much cheaper but I am keeping my fingers crossed none the less.

    He just emailed me back. $180 shipped. I might enter a bid to lose the buy it now option and keep my fingers crossed. I have a feeling they will go for a lot more. They are not worth the buy it now price plus shipping to me. I will just see what happens. I wish they were local.

    Buying speakers locally is obviously the best because you can see/hear them, but locally is not always an option. I wouldn't pay over $350 for a pair of 2As, but I have seen a fair number of pairs available in the area.

    After I did some research I realized $500 would be too much for a pair of sda 2a's. I am just going to keep a watch on my local craigslist. I have just never seen a pair of SDA's so mint before. I got real excited.:D

    I would assume they would be there by Wednesday or Thursday. Can't wait for you to get them. I really want to hear you thoughts on them.

    Did you get a tracking number? It should have the estimated delivery date.

    Thanks, I do have 3 tracking numbers but they must not be in the UPS system yet. I will check on them tomorrow.

    Nice grab...did he remove some or all of the drivers and box them separately?

    i'd wait...get your SDAs locally...i got mine thru Ebay...the guy really did a great packing job. it was a project un-packing them. i found two corners were dented. also, after awhile i opened them up and found the inductor coil on BOTH speakers loose on the bottom of the speaker box!!:mad:

    they are just too heavy and frajile to worry about countless 'mongoes' handling them. not to mention the road hazards.

    If anyone has an idea about shipping speakers just read Lasareth's thread on his Monitor 5a's and they are not nearly as heavy or large as SDA's.

    I agree. I will just wait for something local no matter how long it takes. I was just getting a little impatient with the tax money in the bank. Besides I think I really want something a little higher up the SDA food chain.

    Just my opinion here, I upgraded the x-overs in my SDA2a's and I gotta say they sound awesome. Not as good as my SRS2's but they really sound awesome.

    Not that it matters in the big scheme of things BUT how did companies (Polk included) manage to originally ship all those speakers we have come to know and love. I don't remember a huge number of shipping problems in the 1970's & 1980"s. Does expedited shipping mean they break it sooner?

    They were probabley shipped on cushioned pallets with with styrofoam end caps inside the individual boxes. Shipping companies generally handle pallets with hand trucks or fork lifts and take great care not to damage the property they are responsible for. I am sure a pallet of speakers can easliy run $20,000.
    Handling the individual boxes without proper protection is where we see problems. Corners are always difficult because its real hard to find styrofoam corner protectors that fit properly.

    buying speakers that have to be shippped, esp the likes of some of the SDA's just isn't a good idea. it's costly. and damage can occur. more SDA's will appear.. and the $299 those SDA 2A's went for was to much anyways.

    I do have to wonder what Mike would pay for them since he paid like $500 for a pair of Monitor 10's. I just had to say that!! I sure hope he gets them in working order.

    I live 15 minutes from the seller. lol.

    Some speakers are more durable than others. I've got a pair of home built 3 ways. They're about 60 lbs, MDF, one 10", two 5" mids and a tweeter. My buddy was helping me move about 3 years back and he slipped at the top of the stairs with one of those in his hands. He landed on his back, fractured a single rib and the speaker went tumbling. The stairs and wall had the most damage. There was one midrange that stripped out and rolled 20'. I drilled new holes for it, slipped the connectors back on and screwed it back in. It still works 100% perfectly. I even had the luck of not having painted them yet so the scratches and paint rub off were easily fixed.

    The moral is, speakers are pretty tough, with only a few weak spots.

    Best of luck. I don't anticipate there being a problem.

    Well for one thing they were shipped in their original cartons by professional packers. Also the driver assemblies were brand new not 20+ years old.

    I think that's part of it, and njpolker's comment about companies that ship company-identifiable pallets rings true. That said, original shipping boxes won't guarantee much. My SDA2's were original boxes shipped from Louisville with one stop in Jacksonville before arriving here all beat up (obviously dropped). It is true that both my speaker drivers and the driver of the DHL truck came in at about 20 years old. Lesson learned, the next pair I drove 12 hours and picked them up. Much better.

    Lots of packing and wrapping couldn't save my CRS+ from the "don't give a ****" shippers.

    My 1Cs that I picked up personally cost me alot more in time and fuel, but the friend made in the process and security made it worth it.
