...a PS Audio PCA-2 in my search for a balanced pre that will be occurring sooner rather than later? Also on the short list, FWIW, the BAT VK-20, Classe CP65, a Krell unit (so many to choose from).

I like the PCA-2 and the BAT thanks to their more advanced software to level match the inputs and outputs, etc. The PCA-2 and the Classe both have dual balanced outputs so I can balanced bi-amp in the future.

I too have been thinking the PCA-2 might be something to try. Has the HT bypass I am looking for. They go for about $725 - 750$ on the gon w/o the external power supply. With the external power supply they are like $1000 -$1100. If you get one please post your review.

For a short while I had a PCA-2 paired up to the companion HCA-2, with all XLR connections and a Meridian G08 balanced CDP. Speakers were Tannoy Eyris DC3.

I just didn't like the PCA-2. I quickly went back to swapping between a Sugden Headmaster and Melos SHA-Gold (both headphone amp/preamp combos), both of which are significantly more liquid and musical, and not any less detailed, despite not being balanced. I also vaguely remember disliking the bizarre volume control behavior on the PCA-2. FWIW there is a nice looking Gold w/ remote on the 'gon for $900 (don't know the seller, but has good feedback). The Melos does have XLR outputs, though it is not a true balanced design.

Now the HCA-2 is the sibling that I more respect. Great musical power amp for the money used; not a hint of hard SS sound. Not a lot of guts under the hood, but it sounds good.

The HCA2/Sugden/Tannoy and HCA2/Melos Gold/Taylo Ref Monitors were two really excellent systems for the money, I miss 'em both.

Good information mulveling. I have heard the phrase "crisp" when used in a review of the PS stuff. While the functionality looked good , I am guessing I would not like the sound.
