question about my FX4s

I bought my FX4's from Amazon (they should be here on the 7th).

I have to put them on stands, and I have heard that you want the tweeters to be at around ear level? Now, here's an idiot question...where are the tweeters on the speaker?

Here is my room setup

Wall - 14'
| (rti10) TV (rti10)
|
|
| |DSW Pro 600
|
|

<---doorway (couch - 10-12')
|
| Wall/computer desk | <---wall
|
|
|
This is the basic layout of my room. Since the wall behind me is around 3-4 feet back, and it has a window in it like a bar-type setting...I don't think I will be able to mount the speakers there.
Now, these speakers are supposed to be my rear surrounds, so if I DID manage to mount them on the wall (maybe to the sides of the couch), does it matter which speaker side is facing the couch?

I would recommend you place them on the wall and NOT have them at ear level. The tweeters should fire towards your listening position or front stage.

I'm thinking that based on the hi-res drawing you provided ;) that you have some room, behind you and to the left and right of the space surrounding the desk? Do you have room above the window?

You have flexibility with those speakers as they can be used as dipole or bipole speakers.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

I actually don't have any room on the wall behind me because of a giant bookcase that is holding my wife's 450+ dvds along with my computer desk...

How high is too high for these speakers to be? And should they be on either side of the couch, or off to the sides more?

I'm used to crappy little 4inch tall surrounds that don't really care where you put them.

I have two pairs of these speakers, one set for surrounds, one for rears. My surrounds are mounted about 6' from the ground (bottom of speaker is 6' up) and the rears are 7 feet above the floor. I am very pleased with how they sound. Best bet is to just play around with them temporarily mounted in different positions and heights. See what sounds best to you. Don't forget to re-adjust your levels (or auto tune) every time you move them.

the wall behind me is around 5-6 feet back. Is that too far away for the best sound?

And IF I do go with speaker stands, would something like http://www.racksandstands.com/VTI-BLE101-VI1051.html get the speakers up high enough?

And this may be a stupid question...but as far as SIZE goes, are the FXia4's considered surround or Bookshelf speakers?

Cause they are probably 10x bigger than my previous ones (not lying)

they are designed to be surrounds and are about the same size as some bookshelf speakers. The rear wall sould work well as long as you tune your system properly. dipole mode would probably be better if they will be behind your listening position. you really got to just try out different metods and find which YOU prefer before permanently mounting.

I recently purchased a pair of Fxi A4's for my surrounds. Look on the speaker itself and it will tell you the placement either Left or Right. If you place them behind you, dipole would probably best suit your listening environment. Great speakers...Enjoy!
