Oppo 981 vs. 980

I'm on the fence about buying one, just which one.
I have a Panny Viera plasma, HDMI is fine with me so I don't care if it doesn't have component. So it the Faroudja chip worth the extra? I heard that this chip and Panny plasmas had some issues? any truth to this?
I don't do SACD, this would be a video only machine.

Any suggestions either way please and thanks.

    There is a review of the 981 in the latest Playback Magazine. If I recall it makes some comparisons to the 980.

    EDIT: You can find the review starting on pg. 97,98 and continued on pg. 206-210.

    The Faroudja chip does not work well with the Panny plasmas. I have that combo (with the Panny S97) and the macroblocking is quite bad at times.

    Oppo is releasing a new player soon called the 983. This is something that may be worth waiting for.

    It will have upscaling and delinterlacing by ABT (the makers of DVDO scalers) and it is supposed to have superior video quality with no macroblocking. It is rumored to have very good audio capabilities too. The cost will be a little higher though, maybe around $350.

    see I knew I heard something about the chip and Panny plasma. SO I'd be better off with the 980 or perhaps the new one due to come out...
