RTi8 vs. Large Advents

Hi.

I have an old pair of Large Advents that I'm thinking about replacing with a pair of RTi8s while the sale is on at Frys. The rest of my set up is a CS-10 for the center channel, a pair of small Onkyo speakers for the rear channels and a SVS 2531 PCI sub. I've read some comments about the RTi8s not having a lot of low end, and in HT mode, I'm sure the SVS will compensate. However, I'm wondering about listening to CDs in 2 channel mode. Do you think I'll miss out on some low end? The Advents have a great low end, but they are old technology, so does anyone have any idea how they might compare to the RTI8s? I'm using a Sony DA777ES to drive them.

Thanks

You get an A+ for trying to help out another Polkie, but that's just wrong in so many ways

I have large Advents being run by a Marantz 2270B receiver. For purely 2 ch music, I wouldn't trade them for RTi8's. If it's a mix of HT and 2 ch, then you might be OK, especially with the great sub you've got.

I do use the system for both HT and music, but if I'm not making much of an improvement in the sound system it doesn't seem worth buying the new speakers. dkg999, you seem pretty luke warm on the 8's vs. what I have now.

The large Advents were a very nice speaker for their time and still hold their own today if in good shape. They are not the last word in detail however, and that is more that anything a function of tweeter technology. I will never sell my Large Advents as they make a really nice vintage rig powered by some Silver Pioneer gear...but they are not the main players in my 2 channel or HT systems.

You should try something new and keep the Large Advents. The RTi8 wouldn't be my first choice as I never really cared for that series of speakers. The new line with the RTi A5 and RTi A7 I think may be significantly better...but they are not on clearance. However, it's your $s and if you think you would like the RTi8s...go for it...just don't sell the Advents.

The advents are nice. Have you done any restoration work on them? For music they can be some of the most pleasing speakers you might hear. Very fun to listen to and not fatiguing. Many speakers today are very detailed, but almost too much so, it can wear you out sometimes.

The Advents might even be able to take some of the edge of some digital recordings and sources. The older tweeter works almost as a mechanical low pass filter, just slightly. It rolls off naturally like your ear does, which is why it can be so pleasing. Also, the sensitivity is high, which can be quite an advantage.

I had them reconed about 10 years ago. They still have the original tweeters and crossovers (with the toggle switch to change the crossover frequency). The imaging I get with them is excellent.

You might consider fixing up the crossovers. The old caps should be replaced, and resistors are still good, but you might consider getting higher quality ones. The drivers with the new surrounds and cones are going to last forever now, basically, but the caps would be a wonderful upgrade.

Go listen to newer speakers, but don't be afraid to admit that you really like what you already have. The Large Advents are classics, and have a sound that is easy to listen to. Enjoy the journey.

Yashu, would you recommend replacing the caps with same ones, or would you use a different type or value?

Stick with the same values. As for what kind, it depends on your budget.

Same values, but different types. Polypropaline(sp?) instead of electrolytic. There are many types, you don't need "audiophile" brands, just good quality. Caps 20+ years old are going to show their age, replacing them can improve the sound quite a bit. This is true with speakers, amps, anything old enough.

Thanks for all the advice. I'm glad I asked before I went out and spent the money on new speakers.
