Help with Induction heating for steam

Hi,

I'm working on a project that would require the ability to heat water into steam via electric induction, preferably DC or via AC converter if necessary.

I'm thinking a monotube design with an induction coil surrounding it that could produce steam from 2 quarts of water in say 30 seconds or less.

Anyone here have experience with that kind of design?

    Ok why not....

    Why "preferably DC or via AC converter if necessary"? Watts are Watts AC or DC so you will need "X" watts to steam 2 quarts water, I doesn't care if it was DC or AC power.

    if its going to be induction heating, you WILL have to operate in AC

    how about telling us more about your project...

    Generate steam, and possibly rip a hole in the space/time continuim for extra credit. :)


    But in the meantime, Natalie, if you could post some specs on your project needs, we can probably steer you in the right direction.

    My electric tea kettle works great making steam. Just copy it's design. :D
    Other than that sound advice, I haven't a clue about what the hell you're talking about.

    Induction heating works on the same idea as an electric transformer. The electric transformer uses induction to change the voltage outputs to the electronic part. That is it converts the 120 volts input to 240 volts or 6 volts output for example. However induction can also be used to heat parts in the out put stage.

    AC must be used. I would use the output coil to heat a graphite tube which would heat the water inside the tube and convert it to steam. Not a very good way to heat water by the way.

    Ok I was thinking resistive heating where AC or DC wouldn't matter.

    The link here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Induction_heating indicates 5k to 480khz so this is why she stated DC is she thinking AMP with a 5khz signal.

    I'm thinking this much energy required in a short period house AC power 60hz rectified to a DC voltage then passed to a switcher for the 5khz output needed. Power needed I'm too lazy to bust out my engineer decoder ring buy say in the range of 10kw. YMMV

    Two approaches can be used. Switched DC, or sine wave AC.

    You will need a lot of power to do it, and some element to absord the inducted field. Heating a graphite tube sounds good to me, but your best bet is to do some low power testing with different 'heater' elements. Make note the heater is just a block of something sitting in the water. Soft iron will work well. Consider ripping apart a transformer(lots of elbow grease - LOTS).

    Your coil will need to be a large gauge(read 4-8 guage) coil passing huge current, or a high voltage coil with many turns of smaller wire(20-30 gauge). The smaller wire is not necessarily an advantage as secondary breakdown can occur if your potential gets too high. You would need to make sure the small wire has a fantastic dielectric coating.

    Good luck. Brazing optical components and building a large induction heater. At this rate, you'll cause the next big black out.

    Definitely use a single tube. I would use one with vanes on the inside to maximize surface area between the water and the metal.

    Get a copy of Davies & Simpson's Induction Heating Handbook through interlibrary-loan.
