Surge Protection

Before I power up my new 2-channel system, it would seem prudent to have a quality surge protector. Recommendations? Thank you.

Whatever you go for, DON'T go on the cheap. There are a lot of good companies out there making very good surge protection devices.

Quick story. My cousin who is ALWAYS penny wise and dollar foolish asked me the same question. I directed him to a piece from PS Audio and one from Monster. He decided to go on the cheap and purchased a $50 surge protector strip. He had a power outage yesterday due to all the wind and lost power. When the power came back on buuuuuuuzzzzzzz, the surge protector burned up; it did however save the flat screen TV but that was only by the Grace of God. The outlet, cord, and breaker were fried. Had he the better protection he wouldn't be paying an electrician right now to fix his problem.

kitjv, you can play your rig tonight without surge protection and all will be well. Some purists don't use them and others wouldn't run their rig without one. I would recommend doing some research and get SP that would be a one time purchase.

What is your budget for one?

Silly question, but, how about redundant surge protection? I've got 2 surge protectors, and was thinking of plugging one into the other, then the rig?(until I get a power conditioner)

TrippLite has been around forever. They're known for high quality, affordable equipment.

Something like this HT10DBS is one of their higher end units. It has a decent amount of EFI filtering built in, and the cost isn't crazy high.

Coming from another non electrical engineer, that's a good way to leave it. I know it can be a fire hazard and offers less protection. You can google for more info.

My vote would be NOT Monster. I am by no means an expert, nor am i a "Monster hater"...lol.

I've lost 2 PCs (or parts of them) to power surges in the last 3 years....yes hard to believe, but i'm not lying. I have one of those $200-$300 power bars from Monster and it failed to protect my PC both times.

In Monster's defence, they did cover the cost of the parts (not the labour), but it's a hassle and a long wait without a functionnal PC. They also tested the power bar and result was that it wasn't defective....which scares me a bit.

I have since bought another brand...something like $25 or so.

I would buy TrippLite over Monster.

TrippLite is a real company that has been in the business of power for decades. Monster power equipment is hype.

As much as I am trying to replace my Panamax 1000+ (only cause I want something new) it's proven to me as a good machine. I live in the burbs where they are putting up houses everywhere (mine is just 1 yr) So they turn the power off often enough to connect the new areas. I have not lost one piece of gear YET..... we've been in this house since July 2007 and we've lost power 4-5 times.

Rather than stating a budget, let me say that my system costs about $15K. I am looking for an effective surge protector (w/o power conditioning) that will offer exceptional protection without having to pay a premium for unnecessary fluff. Thank you.

Check out Belkin and APC power conditioners. APC H10/H15 also has Automatic Voltage Regulation which level the voltage to your equipment on the fly without employing battery backups. I bought my H10 at bhphotovideo.com for $200.

    So, buy tripplite :)

Really, in the computer world they're considered top of the line as far as surge protection goes. I've been using their stuff for 20+ years.

You really won't find anything better per dollar spent than a good TL protector. They were the first company that pioneered effective EMI/RFI filtering in a home/small business at a reasonable cost with their ISOBAR products from years and years ago.

    Crazy cheap Willow, nice find.

I have an Adcom ACE-515 and it seems solid. I haven't had any problems with it and it seems to do it's job.

I might have a Panamax 1000+ for sale shortly, I won a Monster 3600 on the bay , I really like the look of M's power conditioners. Once I get I'll compare it to my Panamax. Another reason why I bought the Monster is that it has more plugs which I need.

If I had not scored the Monster for cheap I would have never bothered as my Panamax seems to do a good job, but this way I will be able to compare it and sell the one I don't want or use it on my computer and replace the one in the home office.

ACE 515 is a good device; replaced mine last year since I needed more outlets.

I had a electrian install a surge supressor on the main so the whole house is covered and I also run a monster unit for my HT gear. Now, I have double coverage and we have had a few outages this year due to storms.
