AVR-745 is gone, looking for a replacement. Onkyo 805 maybe?

I sold my AVR-745 because it can't do 1080p pass through. Now that I'm back to my Denon AVR-3802 I'm beginning to think, is 1080p really worth the sacrafice the sound quality of the 745...

I love the build quality of the Denon and the user friendliness of it. Navigation on the HK is a nighmare for someone who isn't very literate of audio. Even for me it takes some time to get used to.

At any rate, I'm looking for a 1080p avr that sounds as good if not better than the 745. I've read lots of good reviews on the Onkyo 805 and with the price is pretty competitive. I have a cheapie stereo onkyo receiver that I'm not very pleased with. Just not sure how well the higher end avr perform.

BTW: The 3802 sounded ok with my RTi6 but now that I have Rti10 in the front it's not handling them too well.

    I'm not a big fan of Onkyo, and IMO Onkyo and HK are two very different sounds. Just make sure you listen to the Onkyo a while before you buy it.

    I have to agree that the HK sound is awesome. It's very unfortunate that the newer unit Quality suck.

    Front door no longer close
    The volume knob get messed up and no longer response after awhile.

    Those are my two main concern. The knob issue happened on all 4 of my HK unit that I have.

    I love HK and am indifferent to Onkyo on the RTi series and despise the HK on the LSi series and feel pretty good about the 805 and above series onks on the LSi's Each set has it's own sound and if you really like the HK sound, you should stick with it.

    Tell me again,why does the avr have to do 1080p ? Why can't you go straight to the TV and use a remote to switch imputs ? SQ is way more desirable.

    I think some of you guys put too much importance on it.

    I agree, Tony. I guess the only advantage of the AVR doing it is if your TV doesn't have enough HDMI inputs available. I send all my video directly to the TV. Including DVD, Dish Network Satellite, BluRay player (soon), etc. I'm using a Harmony 1000 remote and it will switch inputs on the TV for any activity that I choose.

    Nothing under $750 can do what the SR805 can do. I reluctantly went from a Denon 4802 to the Onkyo 805 and have no regrets. The ONLY thing I don't like about the 805 is the slow volume control. After many years with Denon's "intelligent volume control", its very frustrating to wait for that constant volume speed to change.

    Just got it (New 805) from an authorized dealer for $602 shipped... I was effin lucky!

    Only issue is 2 week delivery time... Oh well, I can live for now...

    grimster I got your PM thanks. I'm trying to explorer other options as well. I have a wedding coming up and the fiance isn't going to be happy when I say I'm broke. LOL

    TO answer some of your question. I can do 1080p straight to the TV. I'd just like to simplify my setup. I have a harmony 880 that would also do the switch but I also like the idea of just 1 HDMI cable going straight into my TV and everything else is switched through the avr then only one cable need to go behind the wall.

    another option if you dont have enought hdmi inputs is to get a hdmi switch to add more ports

    Beyond HDMI switching, if/when you go to Bluray or HDDVD, that is the only way to bitstream the advanced lossless codecs to the AVR. If you want Dolby TrueHD, DTS HD Master, or lossless PCM, then you need a receiver with HDMI 1.3a inputs, like what are on the 805 (or the 3808). I would not get a Denon 3806. You can get an 805 for the same price and have more power, better room EQ (Audyssey), and the newest decoding.

    Guys here's a slight update.

    I run all of my entertainment via my HTPC, it's been awhile since I used my denon so a little tweaking was needed.

    But most importantly, I had my HTPC audio output in 5.1 mode and setting the receiver to play in 5 channel stereo. I guess by having two decoders on at the same time it cause this crackling sound. Now that I've set it to 2 channel stereo on the HTPC and let the denon do the decoding, the denon is making my system sing again. But the HK was louder and had the capability to make the tweeters comes to live. The denon even with tweeter maxed out the tweeter only sound as loud as the HK tweeter setting @ flat. The only way to tell is to go buy the 805 and hook it up. Otherwise I'll just use the harmony for my switching needs for the time being until the 3808 drop in price. :D

    Do you have a digital (Coax or Optical) out from your HTPC? If so, there is no reason that the Denon shouldn't pick up full dolby digital, DTS or whatever you send over that cable. Tell your HTPC to send bitstream.
