Blacks sue to silence Jesse Jackson
LAWSUIT: Newly formed organization says civil rights leader extorts money and doesn’t speak for community.

DAILY BREEZE

Saying civil rights leader Jesse Jackson has falsely appointed himself as head of the black community, a group of blacks has filed a lawsuit demanding he stop pretending to represent them and return millions of dollars to corporations he allegedly extorted.

African Americans Against Exploitation, a newly formed group that includes the head of a hairdressers organization and the onetime head of the Kentucky Republican Party, accused Jackson of fraud Wednesday during a news conference at a Westchester hotel.

Three members of the group said Jackson uses his influence to intimidate companies to donate money that is supposed to further the cause of blacks, but instead puts it to personal use — all in the name of blacks, who may or may not know who he is.

“We are asking for a temporary restraining order for him to stop claiming he represents the black community,” said AAAE President Dwane Knight. “The black community has no idea what’s going on.”

Knight did not say how many members belong to AAAE.

James Stern, who heads the National Association of Cosmetologists, said he became involved after Jackson tried to organize a boycott of the movie “Barbershop” because parts of it were disrespectful to icons of the civil rights era, including Jackson and Rosa Parks.

“We didn’t understand there was a boycott,” he said. “The boycott was not called by my black community. We’re at the point where we’re not going to take it anymore.”

Locally, Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A pledged to spend $7.8 billion over 10 years on minority initiatives after Jackson threatened a boycott of the Torrance-based company last year.

Acknowledging that anybody can call themselves the head of anything on First Amendment grounds, Stern said his problem was that Jackson was using his influence to curry favor and make money.

“I can claim myself to be Jesus Christ,” he said. “But as soon as I get money, that’s a different story. If he wants to represent himself, we have no problem with that.”

The suit, filed in Los Angeles on Nov. 12, claims Jackson is calling himself an African-American leader without permission from the country’s millions of black citizens. The suit also was filed on behalf of the Brotherhood Organization of a New Destiny.

“(Jackson) intentionally misrepresented himself as an official of the African-American race in various litigations and disputes among corporate America,” it says. “(Jackson) is knowingly misrepresenting himself as an official spokesperson in legal matters, which does not comply with the law or the plaintiff’s own view.”

A lawyer for Jackson’s Rainbow/Push Coalition called the AAAE suit a waste of time and said she would try to have the case thrown out of court.

“This is a nuisance lawsuit with no basis in law or fact,” Tracy Rice said. “We will seek to have plaintiffs pay the fees and costs associated with defending this frivolous lawsuit.”

She also said that the suit was little more than a publicity stunt.

“These groups do this knowing that a baseless attack on a public figure such as Rev. Jackson will gain them media coverage,” she said. “It is also both unfortunate and disappointing that these matters then take away from those vitally important issues that are deserving of coverage.”

Al Brown, a civil rights veteran who once led the Republican Party in Kentucky, said he didn’t know how the fight would turn out, but felt Jackson would get the message.

“We don’t know what the judge can rule,” he said, “but Jesse Jackson should not represent himself for a whole race of people.”
