Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here

I just got this in the remastered version. Man, the recording volume on this sucker is way too loud. I barely turn my amp up...about half as much as most of my other CD's. It's just in your face loud. What's up with that? I thought the Pink Floyd remasters didn't use the current practice of overcompression.

I believe the box set is the only good remasters, outside of the MoFi ones.

I wish to rescind my original impression of this CD. I think I had a tube going which may have contributed to my impression. I have since replaced my tubes, as well as speakers. I had my first listen on the new system last night and the CD is actually very nice. Sorry

You're damn right. It is the best Pink Floyd album there is (so says me and every band member in Pink Floyd).

The original vinyl is just fine. There was a Columbia half-speed mastered version too as I recall.

I don't know if my copy is the remastered version or not but this is probably one of the better CD's in my collection. My favorite of all the Pink Floyd I've listened to (lots). Great imaging as usual and the last track with the elevator hits quite low. It always seems to impress.

I was a little surprised to hear you say it was a loud recording since all the floyd I have is quite dynamic and lower volume than most of my CD's. Glad to hear it was just a tube.

Can you tell by the cover if it's the remastered one? Looks like this for me

Interesting that Floyd thought this was their best record. I am definately in the minority on this, but I have always thought the best album was "The Final Cut". I know they werent getting along and that Wright wasnt even in the band by then, but the music and lyrics are just awesome. The newly remastered version sounds awesome as well. Anyone else like that album??

I'm still hoping for WYWH to come out on SACD. That will be a very happy day.

I love 'em all, but I'm definitely a Dark Side kinda guy. Saw Waters from the 5th row center about a year ago with Mason guest appearing in Madison Square Garden, he did Dark Side start to finish. Now THAT was a very happy day!!!

The "24k Mastersound" CD did sound pretty good. I think they fetch a nice price on the used market, as a consequence.

The Wish You Were selections on Echoes sound quite fine. My favorite Pink Floyd song is probably Wish You Were Here... or maybe Fearless... or Grantchester Meadows... or... Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave Grooving with a Pict... or...

My absolute favorite album from their catalog, not many people dig TFC at all.

Haha I even have a few copies on vinyl, just in case I get a turntable one day.

To me, TFC always seems like it should be the first Waters solo album. And then when I put it up next to Pros and Cons, I'd generally reach for P&C, which is an AWESOME album!!!

Agreed--I think I'd do the same given a choice.

I personally like just about all the Floyd albums, although Atom Heart Mother never did it for me, or perhaps I didn't give it enough of a chance-Hey perhaps on my new setup...I'll have to give it another listen.

Other than that, I really like all the albums. They each bring something different to the table. I'm not in the camp that if one album doesn't sound like the rest of the bands signature sound (which in Floyds' case, a band with longevity-the 'signature sound' could certainly depend on what generation you are), that automatically discounts it as inferior (follow that?). I am almost certain that some of Floyd's early work (particularly the stuff influenced by Syd) would not have the same effect on me today as it did in my high school years-;)

I listen to each album on its own merits. If like one band, does that mean I should dislike all other bands? No-variety is the spice of life. And I feel this way about a single groups variety in the albums they put out. No they are not all good (generally speaking-not just about Floyd here), but that doesn't mean that one can't just collectively like the band without having to choose a specific album. Sometimes I think of a new album as if it were a new band-regardless of any signature sound-Does it sound good? Does it do something for me?

For me each Floyd/Waters album does something different for me. It may be the acoustics of it, or perhaps it brings me back to an earlier day-and whether the music sucked or not-I would still find that nostalgia quite enjoyable. I can't believe some of the stuff I used to like; stuff that I wouldn't like if I first heard it today-Yes, even the S-A-F-E-T-Y Dance (You can dance if you want to-you can leave your friends behind, but if your friends dont' dance, and if they don't dance, then they're no friends of mine....). Sorry if I just got that tune stuck in your head. :D

Whenever I'd spoken to other peers that like Floyd, some discount The Final Cut or even Roger Water's solo album The Pros and Cons...-I personally like them both; a lot. I like Radio KAOS as well. They just apparently didn't fit into what they perceived to be Floyd's signature sound.
Some may only like The Wall, or maybe only the stuff by or influenced by Syd.
I find the same thing happens with many bands-too many people are just somewhat close minded about music-and well-to each their own-but I make my own judgments on whether an album is good or not, just like the movies. Of course I'll try new music out based on others' recommendations, but I'll still reserve judgement.

My high school years were most certainly dominated by the metal scene, and Metallica, Slayer, King Diamond, etc., etc. I find some people feel that Metallica died at the Black Album-and so they discount anything thereafter-sometimes without even listening to it. I'll admit the sound changed-but does that mean the rest sucks? NO!

Well I've gone on longer than I intended-must me the new meds...
"Life's kind of getting out of control, I think, I don't know if you agree, would you hand me that ash tray? Ya know, so, what it is, is, I know you have heard the word a thousand times, its a rat race, I went through the contortions I have alcoholic seizures, wind up in the hospital and everything else, you know I'm sick, and I'm shaking like a leaf, and it was like silly putty and they threw him in the car and they beat him, and they threw him in the patty wagon and beat him to death; I hit one of those and I knocked the front wheel into outer space, and I kind of got angry myself and I said (laughing) I got a lot of guns, I like salad, I just ate a nice salad, a baked potato, some cream cheese, (laughing) chives, ya know I just like to eat a salad when you have something in mind (still laughing)."
"Exodus-1987-intro to Deranged" perhaps a Syd influence???

    Peace-Enjoy whatever you like.
