Harman Kardon avr347 or Onkyo 805
I currently own a HK 347. I am not happy with the hdmi switching. When you run the hd satelite and upconverter dvd player through it to the tv, it seems to downgrade the picture quality and when you switch devices on the reciever it resets the listening setting. So you have to manually change it. But I decided to run the dvd and sat straight to the tv so i have the best quality picture, and I run just the audio to the hk reciever. What im wondering is if the onkyo 805 worth a 300 dollar upgrade? I bought the hk 347 for 400 and I can buy the 805 for 700. I am still within the 30 day trial to return the hk 347.

I'd say keep the HK. Does your display have multiple HDMI inputs? Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
Thanks

my h/k 7300 never went to a default soundfield of my chooseing. got rid of it for the onkyo 805 that ALWAYS defaults to 7.1 plIIx. love it.
fyi, this should be in the electronics sub-forum.

Yea I should of put this in the electronics, but I do love the sound of the HK, and the price, also my tv does have 2 hdmi inputs. Im still undecisive. If you love the sound of the HK, don't swap it for an Oinker!!!
Edit... I just re-read your post. If you can accomplish the picture quality you are looking for running straight to the TV and love the sound of the HK...stick with it. Onkyos sound a bit different. Your HK should keep the settings in each of the inputs where you last left them. With the exception of volume. I set mine to set volume at -30db when first turned on (and i think when switching inputs)HT

Yea it works fine now that I have the dvd and sat running to the tv. In the on screen display menu of the HK, go to advanced, then at the botton change to no for polling and last instead of sorce. It will always stay at the last surround or stereo setting you have chosen.Monitor 7b's front

Ok so I ordered a onk 805 just to give it a test drive. It showed up today, I swapped the hk 347 out and the onk 805 in. Wow, Huge difference! Way louder, love the thx surround mode, and the remote is AWESOME! Looks like the HK is going bye bye!Living Room setup: Pioneer Elite VSX-21TXH, Krell KAV 300i, PS Audio DL III DAC, Tyler Acoustics Taylo 7u, Dynaudio Audience 120C+, SVS 25/31PCI, B-P-T Clean Power Center, Ps3, Panny 50" S1 Plasma, Tekline speaker cables, Audio Art interconnects, and Pangea power cables.

I upgraded from the 605 to the 247 for the sound quality. Okay, pros and cons of both receivers taken into account it was actually more of a lateral move. I loved the more balanced sound that I'm getting with the Polk-HK combo (not irritatingly bright) but totally HATED the stupid remote and interface. Onkyo has a better user-friendlier remote and in general easier to figure out than HK
-
Onkyo is WAY more user friendly and all around easier to setup. The HK is not a very good video reciever, but its a good audio reciver.Living Room setup: Pioneer Elite VSX-21TXH, Krell KAV 300i, PS Audio DL III DAC, Tyler Acoustics Taylo 7u, Dynaudio Audience 120C+, SVS 25/31PCI, B-P-T Clean Power Center, Ps3, Panny 50" S1 Plasma, Tekline speaker cables, Audio Art interconnects, and Pangea power cables.

maybe we should have a sticky thread on receivers/amps info in the speaker section, as they are as important as speakers!
...me myself got an 805...for $699, it just cannot be passed up!!! -
Thats what I paid for it from vanns. And im in love! I enjoy being able to run everything through it and just one cable to the tv without sacrificing picture quality. HK was not able to do that. The remote is VERY user friendly compared to the HK. U can turn the volume up or down no matter what you are controlling with the remote. HK had to be on reciever. Pain! All around better product! Highly recommend!Living Room setup: Pioneer Elite VSX-21TXH, Krell KAV 300i, PS Audio DL III DAC, Tyler Acoustics Taylo 7u, Dynaudio Audience 120C+, SVS 25/31PCI, B-P-T Clean Power Center, Ps3, Panny 50" S1 Plasma, Tekline speaker cables, Audio Art interconnects, and Pangea power cables.

No offence to anyone, but I think this thread is funny. Your going from one of the base line HK's to one of the most expensive Onkyo's. And complaining that the HK is not as good as the Onkyo. To say that Onkyo is better than HK, with the comparison you just did, kinda unfair, dont ya think?
Lets be alittle more realistic, lets compare apples to apples. How about the Onkyo 805 compared to the HK 645?
Hell... for ****, giggles, power, easy to use and sound quality, I'll put up my 635 against the 805 or the 905.

It sounds like ease of use won out on this one. I agree that the HK menus are a little confusing and hard to get around, but I personally wouldn't make the sound quality vs. ease of use tradeoff though. Different strokes for different folks.
The only step up for me from my Hk 635 would be into a true HT processor/Pre-amp and away from an AVR.HT

me, too. I've thought about going to an HDMI switching receiver, but they still seem pretty buggy and I'd pretty much only be using them as pre-pros since I have 5-channels of b&k goodness.
But, HDMI pre-pros seem to be lagging behind and sure to be more pricey than similar featured AVRs. Sure, I'd take that bet anyday of the week. Having heard the 805 and 645 on LSi's, I would take the 805 everytime unless you like veiled, congested, and restricted sound...
Again, YMMV but I would say the current gen of oinkers (805 and up) are a different beast than prior models. If I dont know anything about the product, I dont say ****.
Comparing Onkyo and HK, is not brand bashing. Never did I say Onkyo was bad or crap. I made a comment on was the 2 recievers being compared. And yes I think it is an unfair comparison.

Wow did this become personal?? lol
IMO I think the 805 is better than the HK347. I never heard the 645, and also the 347 didnt seem to have enough power to really push the rti8's. Whatever, most objective people saw your post for what it was, think what you will.... You did imply that no one, $ for $ should ever consider an Onk over HK and that anyone who did was a moron. (The "no offense to anyone" says as much)There is no genuine justice in any scheme of feeding and coddling the loafer whose only ponderable energies are devoted wholly to reproduction. I never said that JD. I think your trying to read between the lines alittle too much.
I never said you should not choose HK over Onkyo. What I said was, if your going to compare HK to Onkyo, please compare apples to apples. If you prefer Onkyo, thats good, I have not and never will bash Onkyo or any other manufacture (well maybe except BOSE:p)
I have listened to the 805 and the 705. While delivering excellent power, the sound quality was no there. IMO.
I made a simple statement. If you are going to read between the lines, you should have read what I was trying to say. That the Onkyo will perform better than the HK you (he) compared it to. I also said, that I would compare my older 635 to the 805 (which i have already done), and for sound quality, I found the HK better.
What I found funny was, after switching from the 345 to the Onk 805 he found a major jump in power. Well DUUUUUUHHHHH.
This is how arguments get started and why memebers get banned. People take a statement and blow it way out of proportion.

I had a Onkyo 674 and went to a HK 235 only because I needed preamp outs. If it wasn't for that, I would have stuck with the Oink. The HK is a pain to set up and the remote is a disaster. I miss the Onkyo's ease of use and features. As long as things go as planned, I'll be upgrading again today and the HK will serve as a backup piece."He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster.
