Here's a troubling question. My receiver comes with a free HDMI cable from the seller. But he sent it as a seperate package to me. Does that mean I'll have to pay fees on the HDMI cable shipment as well? I'd be pissed if that's the case.

Just as a follow up. I ended up paying NOT ONE PENNY for anything upon arrival.

Here's a breakdown of the costs:
    Cost: US $674.90
    Shipping & Handling: US $62.40
    Total: US $737.30

I didn't pay anything for import duties, taxes, brokerage fees. Nothing. I'm so happy!! Shipping through Fedex from Buffalo, NY US to Edmonton, AB CA by the way!

    Thanks for the help everyone.

Sweet deal. It is nice when things like that work out in your favor. It always makes me truly appreciate a seller who is willing to fill out forms in a way that saves me money and I tend to go back to those sellers whenever possible.

    Congrats, and enjoy.

I'm not sure what he wrote. But it obviously wasn't a used item as the box was sealed. Nor did he lie about what it was cause it shipped in the original box with nothing covering it up. I find it odd that I didn't even have to pay taxes...

I guess the question is what happens if the receiver is damaged and you need to file a claim? Do they void the claim if it wasn't accurately represented on the initial bill of sale?

I got the Onkyo TX-SR805 and I'm loving it. It's a huge beast!

Why would I go to the shipping company for a warranty claim? In any case, we have no idea if the seller misrepresented the product in the customs form. From what I can tell I don't see any way he could have lied about the product, it's value (to an extent), or it's condition (new). Marking something as a gift only goes so far ($60 US).
The chance I took in saving $500 on this receiver is that shipping through ebay voids the onkyo warranty. Luckily the ebay store I bought it from has a one year "warranty" with it. Whether or not this warranty can be trusted is the chance I took.

I just bought an 805 off e-bay, probably from the same guy you did. It was too good of a deal to pass up! It's good to know I won't have to pay extra shipping fees.

I think his name was e_warehouse. A great seller if you ever see a product he's selling, I recommend him for sure. Shipped fast, great price, answered all my questions, he was great. Lots of other products too including Polk speakers.

Keep in mind you may still not be off the hook. My speakers arrived from just across the border and I too was surprised I didn't get billed -- month and a half later I received a bill in the mail for about 75% of the cost of the item.

Didn't mean to rain on your parade. Just to warn you so that IF something does happen it doesn't come as a huge shock (and you're prepared financially?). For me it was an unexpected cold slap to the groin, but also a good lesson and eye opener.

Does anyone know if you ship a used receiver from US to CAN if you have to pay customs and brokerage fees?

If so do you know the best way to avoid?

I have no experience with importing (except relatively small items from Monoprice), but i was also under the impression that the "bill" comes later in the mail...based on a few threads i read.

Maybe others who DID paid import fees and duties could clarify how it happened?

It depends on the courier. USPS - you pay before you even get to receive the item. UPS, they bill you later. I'm not sure about FedEx, but I would assume they also send it in the mail if applicable.

    Hi Rike,

Me again. The last item I had shipped from the US was by FedEx Ground and although I didn't get charged at the door, I did receive the nasty bill almost 2 MONTHS later! I actually had another same item sent by FedEx International Express and they collected the money up front.

Again, it all reiterates why I don't ship couriers 'cross border' unless it's I that come out ahead.

Wow. I never knew people were actually having such problems with importing big-ticket items from the states. I guess I've been taking for granted the fact that I can just drive over there to pick up my stuff myself and pay the taxes at Canada customs myself. Hopefully you don't get too nasty of a surprise in the mail.

It's hit and miss. I have purchased lots from the US. A HK 340 (didn't pay anything) tons of cables (only paid once on 1 set of cables (all used BTW)) A panamax 1000+ (nothing) recently I bought a bunch of cables from Signal and I had to pay around 30$ at the door. Now I just won a Monster 3600 which is being shipped ground Fedex, I asked him to put gift on it he refused as he said he is running for office and he didn't want it to come back to him. He marked the parcel value as 100$, I should find out next week if I'll have to pay extra on that...
