Sub's ported or non ported

What are the pro's and con's of ported vs non ported sub's. I ordered the Epik valor which is non ported and now wondering if I should have ordered the knight which is ported since both are on back order I can probably switch my order. Used for ht and music dvd's. thank's

In general porting offers a low tuning point and higher efficiency. The drawbacks are lower power handling, port noise, and a loose - less controlled sound.

Sealed designs are less efficient (thus needing more power), and though not always tuned as low - they don't have the 'waterfall' drop at the tuning point as ported designs do. A properly designed sealed box will roll off at 6db/octave (compared to 18-24db/oct in most ported designs). All things equal they tend have a tighter, more articulate sound.

Those aren't hard fast rules, even if they were, there would be exceptions - but in my experience its a decent summation.

I'm dreaming of the same sub. Made the mistake of pulling the trigger too fast on a 115wpc velodyne last Xmas with my monitor 70s, and want a bit more musicality for deep bass with my outlaw RR2150. I can survive, but I went beyond the 30 day return period on the Velodynes. Plus, the WAF is a MAJOR hurdle with any kind of large box. But I think the Valor is the best 350w BASH sub on the market for the under-600 range, since it is a 15 inch, which gives way more square inches of air push than a 12.

Definately report back in when the Valor comes in. You should love it. We want pics and decent (more than 3 lines) review. If you don't provide it, we will hound you incessantly....

If they are done correctly, there really aren't any pro's or cons......

Most of the differences people report are due to bad designs (on either type), poor quality, mis-use or heresay.....

Some of the best designs in the world with the most accurate bass are ported... and sealed.... and transmission line.... If that makes any sense...

Russ summed it all very well.

We use these subs in home. This is not in car use or outside performance style. In house, the average room gain coupled with a sealed box's rolloff can match very well. This makes the sealed box an option. Ported is just fine in a home as well.

There are differences between the boxes. The biggest difference is still the woofer. Some just perform better in ported boxes, and others can't hold their own unless they are mounted sealed or infinite baffle.

You can use the effeciency bandwidth product(EBP) as a guideline. Take Fs and divide by the drivers Qes. If the answer is close to 50, consider sealed. If you approach 100, go ported. Sadly, this rule of thumb does not know what you are hoping for at the end of the day.
