You will see an improvement with a separate prepro, and it shouldn't just be in volume. There should be better separation between instruments, better bass, better clearer vocals & dialog. Of course you should have already noticed these improvements already.
What is it that you think is wrong? You certainly now have the ability to go as loud as you want without worry. If you're mainly interested in an "improvement in volume," buying a preamp is a waste of money, IMO, unless you have a very large room and/or you enjoy listening at insanely high volumes.
However, a very nice 2-channel preamp would probably sound much better than your 805.HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50 LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub

it does sound clean as hell but sometimes I found myself trying to go more on the volume and there is no more to go and these speakers are huge and the amp is a beast 300wpc maybe I need to play with the settings in the onkyo to get more volume or is a pre the only way to go?Home Theater sony 52 inch lcd,Cinenova grande 7 channel, polk RTI8,CSI5,FXI5,onkyo 805

If you are running 2 ch. exclusively, I would go pick up a nice 2 channel pre. You will see an improvement in sound quality, maybe volume. You must either have a large **** room or be at least partially deaf like I am, if you are looking to go louder with 300WPC.....

Many speakers have a built in "bass boost", and sound fuller at low volume settings.
My SRS 2's seem to want some volume to "come alive" in the bass department.
By comparasion, my Matrix 801's are fuller sounding in the bass.
So, when I use the Polks, I simply turn my subwoofers up a bit to compensate.
Bass level is a personal preference, I like mine full and rich.
Perhaps you might explore a good pair of sub woofers instead of a huge amp ? -
what pre do you recommend?Home Theater sony 52 inch lcd,Cinenova grande 7 channel, polk RTI8,CSI5,FXI5,onkyo 805
