Bass management or active x-over?

Here is my issue:
I am going to use my pair of DIY subwoofers with the SDA 2As. After much debate, I have decided that an active x-over is my best option. Now here is the issue, should I get the Reckhorn B-1 and just have the bass control, or get the Reckhorn F-1 and be able to low-pass the subs, and well as high-pass the SDAs. (not too high, but just eliminate cross)

I have no experience with those two products, but just to throw it out there for ya' I have had good results from the Velo SMS-1. Food for thought.

IMO I think you have a better chance of getting a good blend between sub's and mains if you have adjustable hi and lo pass filters.The B1 may work fine but its lowest xover setting appears to be 50hz so to work optimum with your SDA's they should not extended much below that.Another thing to keep in mind is if you were wanting to run the subs in stereo the F1 sums both the left and right channels giving a mono sub output only.Some prefer operating subs in stereo I personally have had great results running them mono.

That Velo SMS 1 is a great product but doesn't it sell for something like $500- 600.:eek:

Sorry if I was confusing. My basic questions is just low-pass the sub or low-pass the subs and high-pass at around the same point. I'm not sure if it is important to me to have my subs in true stereo, but I would be ok with twin mono subs too. (But thanks for the point, I didn't think of that.)

I do like the idea of the F-1 and having the ability to high-pass. Do you think it would a big deal not having the frequency boost and other options avilable in the B-1?

The velodyne looks good, but the prices of the Reckhorn units is about $45 and $75 (with good reviews).

Although nice to have ,I don't think the boost feature is as important as having the hi pass.Your NHT woofers will not need any boost to help them in the bottom end especially for music listening.But the key is getting a good blend between the subs and SDA's and that is easier to achieve having both a hi and low pass filter.

Ya, your right GV#27. I'll go order the F-1 tonight and I guess if worse comes to worse, I could always get the B-1 after the fact since the F-1 is only $45. I could always daisy chain the controllers later with the B-1 coming off of the F-1 sub outputs.

Sure I think starting with the F1 is your best bet.

You might want to look at the Outlaw Audio ICBM or the Marchand XM-9. The biggest difference here is that they allow for the use of stereo subs or a summing option, in case you decide later to try stereo subs. They are both available used from time to time for reasonable prices.
