Jacko Erases McCartney

The new mixes for Michael Jackson's 25th anniversary of "Thriller" are
out. And guess what? Paul McCartney has been erased from "The Girl Is
Mine."

It's a new kick in the teeth for McCartney, who essentially lost the
rights to his song catalog during the recording of "Thriller" and that
song back in 1982. It was at that time that the Beatle shared
information with Jackson, who turned it over to his lawyer, John
Branca.

Now Jackson and producer Will.I.Am have remixed "The Girl Is Mine,"
originally a duet between McCartney and Michael. As far as the new
recording is concerned, Paul is dead. SO to speak.

Three other remixes of Thriller tracks have turned up today on YouTube
including Kanye West's sluggish take on "Billie Jean."

If the idea here was for these new generation producers to reintroduce
Jackson, it may not have been such a good idea. Will.I.am's remix of
"Pretty Young Thing" comes from a demo track and doesn't sound much
like anything. Only Akon's remix of "Wanna Be Starting Something" has
a fresh reference. But it's Akon's voice that takes the lead, with a
little of Jacko's old vocal mixed in for good measure.

Will these remixes sell more copies of "Thriller" or restore Jackson's
prominence? Maybe. But the pictures of Jackson from 1982 when he was
still dark skinned and halfway normal looking are hard to rectify with
the current model.

It looks like he's been remixed too.

You can bring it over, but you won't leave with it in one piece. Bruce knows.

Interestingly enough, the original Thriller was an outstanding pop recording, thanks mostly I believe to Quincy Jones' production.

Redoing it for the 21st Century (irrespective of the snub to Sir Paul) reminds me of Joni Mitchell's quip from Miles of Aisles:
Nobody ever said to Van Gogh, "Paint A Starry Night again, man!"

I deplore Jacko as a person, but... some of his music sure is great.

At this point most of the money just goes to lawyers and lawsuits anyway, so you're more paying for that than paying to him when you buy stuff :)
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

It's Mike's music, so he can do what he wants with it.

From a business standpoint, it's probably a smart move it remix it. Now the die-hard MJ fans will want to purchase the "new" recording.

From an artistic perspective, that's what musicians do -- change it up so it doesn't always sound the same.

People definitely connect with the old MJ. When I was part timin' at CC, I'd kick on MJ and always get a positive reaction with people singing or dancing.

Regardless of all of his wierdness (That man never had a chance for any kind of normal life) he is one of the most talented musicians of the 20th century. His music will & has withstood the test of time.

As for what he is doing with Thriller now? I couldn't care less, I have the original & it ain't going nowhere!

    Jacko Erases McCartney

The new mixes for Michael Jackson's 25th anniversary of "Thriller" are out. And guess what? Paul McCartney has been erased from "The Girl Is Mine."

Jackson may have had some contractual reason(s) to remove McCartney's vocal tracks from "The Girl Is Mine".

It is most likely that Jackson did not have a contractual agreement to use McCartney's vocal tracks in any "derivative" works (e.g. remixes) made from the original recording, and they had no choice but to edit McCartney out of the remixes. Often, a recording artist, or the record company they are under contract to, will agree to the use of an artist's voice on a particular work, but not for any derivative works made from the original work.

If the producers of the original work want to use McCartney's voice on the remixes, then they most likely would have to pay him again...this is assuming he even agrees to be involved in the remix project.

The liner notes for Thriller do not indicate that McCartney was under a record company contract at the time he worked on Thriller. There is no statement that says "Paul McCartney appears courtesy of ________ Records". Therefore, I do not think the omission is indicative of non-agreement from a record company. It might be that McCartney just did not want to be involved with or associated with the remix project...perhaps due to the hip hop and rap artists involved in it. Some artists do not want to be associated with rap or hip hop in any shape, form, or fashion. It might also be that McCartney agreed to the use of his vocals, but he wanted a price the producers were unwilling to pay.
