Looking for dynamic compression software

I have some voice recordings in MP3 format of some technical discussions. The issue is that there is big difference in volume between the people who are close the mike and who were sitting on the other end of the room.
looking for a software that can normalize the volume levels. An open source/freeware program is preferred.
