Dual Subs Rock

IMO I will never go back to a single sub. To me, this was probably the best improvement I ever made in my home theater. Dual SVS subs helps make my system awesome. Who else runs dual, and what do you think?

I used to. Honestly, it was too big. I was running dual 12", each with its own ported box and amp.

I still have one of the two in my bedroom.

But yeah, dual subs are definitely sweet.

    Agreed, I run dual PB12 Plus/2s off a Velodyne SMS-1. Awesomeness indeed.

Thats one way to do it - I dont recomend it...

Reason being you are passing a signal through a sub amp to your mains, never a good thing...

The easiest way to do it is use the main outs on your receiver/preamp...

Problem is alot of people only have one set...

So another way would be to get a Paradigm X30 to use, and run your mains and subs through it...

Just crank your subs crossovers and volume on max and let the Paradigm X30 do the dirty work...

Stereo subs will totally change any opinions you had on subs for 2 ch...

Perfect integration at all times, very wide staging, the works...

I am excited to try the stereo subs I just built, the only problem is I don't have the room until I move this spring. I am just going to run them off the preamp to a bass managment unit, then to their own amp. I tried just running them line level because they are internally crossed, but since they are less efficient then my speakers, they got lost and didn't have seperate volume control.

I run dual subs as well, stacked vertically in mono config.

Yes it made a huge difference with our system as well.

Next upgrade is better power cables for the subs.

Going to buy a pair of signal cables "Magic cables"

I had mine stacked both vertically and then horizontally. I preferred horizontal, but that was pure luck on the positioning. My amps have line level pass through with a fixed 80 Hz xover. I buffered the output from the source to the 2 sub amps and then passed through one sub amp to the mains amp.

Bass tends to reinforce itself with the subs very close together, but the wavelengths are a few feet long.

I gotta agree, that extra 6 dB can make a huge difference.

Yup, 2 subs are better then one. If placed close together they'll reinforce each other. If spaced apart it will generally provide more even coverage throughout the room, with less peaks and nulls from standing waves.

Mine did best stacked. When separated they created more nulls.

:DMine are both in the front corners. Both are passive. You are right they are huge and take up a bit of room, but generally just serve to empress.

Just wondering how hard is it to tune dual subs? I have one BIC h-100 and was thinking about getting another. Is it just trial and error to find the sweet spots?

That's one way to do it. Or you can buy a SPL meter from Rat Shack and use room EQ Wizard. Experiment with placement and phase till you get the best results.

spl meter will def help out with the calibration. I highly recommend the Velodyne SMS-1 if you can find one used to run them as well. That thing does wonders with LFE.

Are you running a dance hall or a home system?

You only need to have good performance at your listening spot. The SPL meter is overkill, and limited to tests with constant amplitude signals.

    I gotta agree...

For music, gotta put the SPL meter down and let your ears decide...

I like my rig on the bass heavier side -- so SPL meter dosnt do me much good.

The SPL meter is a great way to find any peaks or voids and correct them, it's far from overkill.

You have enough subs for a bar or small dance club, your opinion doesn't count. :D

I actually run 3 subs (Def Tech Pro sub 80's) across the front and 2 Energy's for LFE. Some say overkill i say it sounds great.

I ended up picking up completely different cables.

Went out on a limb and bought (3) Monster Cable "Powerline 300" premium power cables.

2 for each of my PSW1000's (replaced the WIMPY stock power cord)
1 for my new Sony STR-DA9000ES processor (also with wimpy cord, but thankfully detachable)

Just plugged it all in tonight.

Noticed tighter, punchier bass from the get go from the PSW's.

You really had to see the power cables I used previously with these subs. One was the stocker and another one was some cheap **** thing I found.

My interconnect/power project is finally done (for now)

    Hmmm, I have a few Power Line 300 --

Not the stoutest power cables out there, but I got them at dealer cost... so no complaints here...

Haha, I got all three at dealer cost too, so I can't complain.

They are quite a dozen steps up from what these PSW1000's had before.
