Hey everyone,

Made a pretty impulsive buy on a really good deal on the cherry Rti10s for 450 shipped!!! Anyhow, unfortunately I dont have the power to push it since I have a Onkyo SR503 entry level receiver that does not have any pre-outs unfortunately. I am looking at the HK 635 or 645 which I can get for around 400 used. Would this tide me over for 6 months until I can pull together the cash for a nice 200wpc amplifier? Do I have any other options..like I said I have about 500 in disposable funds for this. Thanks.

I am in the same possition. I have the 8's and had an Onkyo 601. I Got the HK 525 for $300 and am saving for an amp. The jump in actual power from the Onkyo to the HK is remarkable. I always wanted more from the Onkyo. Now the HK is able to go higher then I am. I do not really need an amp now but you know how it goes.;)

The used HK's were the cheepest way that I saw to get pre-out's. I also like the sound over Onkyo and Denon on the RTi's 8's.

where did you get your used Hk? I need a receiver with 3 HDMI 1.3 in, and from what I saw from looking at other HK's is that they seem to get VERY pricey when it comes to those types of connections as well as power.

    Welcome to Club Polk Jay.

Yes an HK with preouts will do just fine until you can get an amp.

Pick whichever one has the preouts & all the bells & whistles that you want it to have.

Don't be fooled by Onkyo's power ratings, I guarantee you H/k will power your RTi-10s better than the onkyo. Those power ratings most manufactures show are **** and are just there to fool the consumer into thinking their reciever is better because it has "more power". H/k ratings are much closer to its actual power.

Actually, Onkyo are at least "clear" in their specifications (if you search around a bit) that they measure "two channels driven" (compared to "all channels driven" for h/k). Most others just leave you to believe they can output 110w/ch or 140w/ch when, in reality, they can barely manage 50w/ch.

What cfrizz said, spend as little as you can for an AVR to get the bells, whistles, connections you want and pre-amp outputs. Then save up about 500.00 for a 2 channel amp and you will be good. HK and RTis are said to be a good mix.

thanks for the input everyone...i think im going to be patient and get the H/K 347 rather than the 645 b/c there seems to be some problems with the HDMI switching capability and logic 7.

Any suggestions on what amps can provide a solid 200 X 2 WPC that are relatively cheap.

I do not think any HK's have the 1.3 HDMI. Correct me if I am wrong but I think they have the 1.2 only? I don't use HDMI FWIW. The Onkyo's have the most versital and up-to-date connections for the price. IMO the HK's have a warmer sound and more power at the same rating.

I got mine at Audiogon. It started at $475 + shipping and I got it to $300 shipped.

If you don't mind not having HDMI, or having HDMI video switching only, you could just get a refurbished h/k235 (no HDMI) or 245 (HDMI video only) for somewhere in the $200-250 range.

BTW, I am almost certain daniel_paul is correct: all current harman/kardon receivers do not have HDMI 1.3. In fact, I am almost certain they support only HDMI 1.1 (not 1.2). That may change this year of course.
