there were a bunch of settings in Vista that I had to change in order to "see" my network PC with XP.

In fact, now I remember there was also a Windows Update download I used on my network PC with XP. Google it for now, but I'll try to post more info when I get home tonight.

Worked perfectly. Just shared my MP3 collection across the home network. :D

I mapped from my new Vista gaming PC to my XP Pro box.

And you don't have any other type of security software running on the laptop? Just the windows Firewall?

What is running on the laptop is AVG (the free edition) and I run AdAware. I removed the Norton trial that came with the machine. These two are also on the PC.

I just realized, however, there is other security software running on the PC. I joined an accountability program at church and we had K9 protection software installed, as well as some program whereby my accountability partner can see the list of internet sites... I've emailed him with some questions. He's already said he's willing to come over and try to get the network up, I'm just trying to do it myself (with your guys help) first.

As I said, the pings worked.... should I disable AVG on each machine? Might that help?

I'll make the router changes and workgroup changes tonight.

AVG shouldn't have anything to do with the problem you're having.

I'm running AVG, no problem there. I'm glad I don't have an 'accountability buddy' or my ear would hurt from him yelling at me. ;)

I still have a feeling its the router. The router is blocking information transfer, but allowing simple ping. I could be wrong
