Have you considered a remanufactured transmission?
Rebuilt is just worn parts replaced with new parts and new seals.
Remanufactured is basically a new tranny inside a used housing.
It's better than a rebuild and cheaper than a new transmission.

    UM...... NO...

If you can get a used one installed for $1,000 (parts and labor), that is the route I would take. The dealer wants $3500...that's a $2500 difference!! Definitely worth the gamble on a used unit. Even if the used one craps out in the first month, you would only have to pay for the labor, not the trans. Basically if a used one lasts the first month, it should be good for much longer, and I'm sure it will last until you've paid off the truck.

Make sure you flush out the cooler lines to the radiator, or better still, install an aftermarket cooler.

I would rebuild it with the intent to trade it in after you get into your new home. The warranty should cover you until then.

I don't know about Ford, but my Honda had a 10 year/100k mileage warranty on the drivetrain...........if Ford has that, how do they consider the tranny NOT a part of that system? (I didn't see you mention how many miles are on it other than at 75k you had some issues)

I would go for the new one personally. If you're planning on keeping the car just until the payments end, then you can sell the car with the warranty on the transmission (assuming it's transferrable) and ease someone into taking that thing off your hands.......

Honda works hard for their Public Relations so when Honda had a problem with their new 5 speed auto transmission, they did the right thing. The transmission warranty was changed 50k to 100k mileage, there PR is more important to them then $. IMHO
