Monitor 5JR+

So these are the first good speakers I ever bought back in 1979 I think-college
Before that I believe I was slapping car speakers in home made boxes with some "interesting" cross-overs

To me these still sound GREAT, missing a bit in the bottom-end but they are bookshelves and now my new M&K sub fills that in. I really LIKE the imaging on them

I've never done anything to them repair wise and am just wondering if I should, things like refoam\replace, or should I just wait for some signs that this needs to be done. I've rocked em fairly hard over the years-college and all

/aside
I recently purchased some R50s and have to say, they just don't have quite the sound that my little 5s do(or that I was expecting). But Frys had em dirt cheap even with shipping and after me being on the road for the last 5 years(250+ nights) am back to a more conventional lifestyle and HAD to have some HT luv. Wouldn't you know it I've watched all of about 4 movies in the last 6 months, but music is ROCKIN nearly all the time

Am looking at other options for fronts-possible some RTi8s from the above mentioned store, some SDAs(local), or other older monitor series (e-bay)

Those of you who've owned the older Monitor series know the sound I'm talking about-does the newer stuff offer that?

My current center is a CS101, which I'm sure I need to look at something else(in fact there's a CS175 on CL for $50 that I may go look at) /end aside

Thoughts
TIA

so unless something goes buuzt-snap-sizzle-pop, I shouldn't have to worry about doing any repairs to my 5s?

The old Monitor series is very well regarded, one of the best bang for buck vintage offerings out there. You can always upgrade a cap or two in the crossover if you feel inclined, but nothing should be far out of spec as is. Foam? You've got rubber surrounds, and they should be nice and broke in by now, no worries there.

The R50 is a different animal altogether. All things equal, they are better and worse than your 5's. On the charts and graphs, they will play flatter, deeper, and louder - but some just prefer the laid back midrange and upper bass 'bump' of the older Monitors. I've got a pair myself (R50), with a single changed cap (sonicap) in the crossover, a layer of no-rez, and 25lb bags of lead shot on top - mated to the new PSW111 subwoofer (plan to add a second and run stereo subs) in the 2nd living room for music only off the whole house rig. Alot of speaker, for not alot of scratch.

Check the Polk eBay store, and pick up a CSi25 for under a Franklin to your door, forget craigslist.

    Cheers,
    Russ

I have a pair of 5jr and had a pair of Monitor 7b...fantastic sound from those Monitors. I also have a few pair of RT series speakers. I have not experienced any newer stuff that has quite the same sound as those older Monitors.

I can't weigh in on repairs/upgrades...nerver done any.

If you feel so inclined refresh the x-overs with Solen caps and Mills resistors. I did this to a pair of Monitor 5b's and they came out sounding fantastic.
