No Sound with PSW505

hello all,
i am a new member who is just getting into HT audio with Polk. I recently just purchased the PSW505, but when i hooked it up there is no sound. I checked the cable on my old sub, so i know the cable is good. I am wondering if its because i have an old Kenwood Receiver. its only 45 watts per channel. i know thats a weak one, but i plan on upgrading in a couple of months. Basically there is no sense of life coming from the 505. If anybody has any thoughts that would be great.
thank

Hi and welcome. Can you explain your connection type, if the red light / green light is on, on the back of the sub, if the main on / off switch is all OK, whether the 3 way toggle switch on the back is set to on, off or standby etc. If these are all in the correct positions, there would appear to be another issue and it maybe worthwhile contact Polk Customer Support.
    Ciao for now.

Is it connected via speaker level or line level jacks?

I'd suggest contacting Polk customer service.

thanks for the replies. to answer the first one, the subwoofer was on and the light was green. everthing was set to on. No Sound. The second, I connected the sub via subwoofer cable i think LFE is what its called. Since i just got it i packed it up and shipped it back.

Ya i find that as well there Quad..

Its unfortunate.. However i do have a option on my Pioneer receiver to push more to the sub called LFE Plus but i don't always want teh sub to be pounding when i'm watching regular TV. Does anyone else know what is the best setting for this sub?

I have this sub and my settings depend on the the audio source. Also in the set: RTi10, CSi5 and FXi5. Connection through LFE and with all speakers set to large...

When audio source is 2.0: Amplifier "Bass Out" set to "BOTH", so the main speaker's bass is also sent to the subwoofer.

When audio source is 5.1: Amplifier "Bass Out" set to "SBWR", so only the bass intended for the subwoofer is sent to the subwoofer.

With the volume on the PSW505 set at less than half, the house is shaking !

    quadfarmer,

if i cranked the volume on the receiver to get the sub to work, i would have ended up like marty mcfly in back to the future, sent through the wall and blown my speakers. the new one should be here hopefuly next week.

I haven't experimented much yet, but i also find i have to crank up the volume behind my sub to even hear it! I have Rti8, CsiA6, Rti4, PSW505.

Sub didn't work when connected with Left or Right speaker input, so i plugged it into LFE and it works. Which i guess means my signal is unfiltered by my receiver??? I only tested using Rogers cable box, but it was in 5.1 through coax and i could barely hear the sub. Rti8 sounded great though :)

I'm going to bring it to my brother-in-law's and just switch my sub for his and see what the 505 can do in his setup. His is a smaller one and it shakes the house....i'll try and post my results.

    Cheers!

FYI, just came back from my bro-in-law's...

He has a Velodyne (not sure of model, but it's a 10"...older model). We listened to his, unplugged it, plugged mine.....no difference. He had volume at half, i had volume at half. Pretty much same result, no noticeable difference.

He had his hookep up via left-right plugs (his doesn't have a single LFE in the back). So i tried mine like that, then single LFE....no difference.

It has to be one of two things at my place...he has it in a corner, i don't....or his receiver has the volume upped for the sub.

I was wondering if people use the default settings (every speaker equal) when they setup their receiver....or if they adjust it?

Sub placement is as important as your speakers and you should take the time to do it right. Most will adjust their speaker levels by ear or with a spl meter from the listening position.Don't forget to set distance also for all your speaks, sub too.

729.99 wow, thats twice what i paid. i have never seen it listed for that price. So my budget is around 400$, can anybody recommend a equal sub. Right now i have the RTi6s and the CSi5. i was starting to look at the new DSWs. Any advice would be great.
    thanks

I get what you mean. The sub was to the right of my TV with an open space behind it. I moved it to the left of my tv in front of the Rti8 and what a difference. It's MUCH improved.

Now the volume is set to half and it sounds good!

I think there are probably better subs out there, but here in Canada, we can't get much for the price i got on the 505. The SVS pb10 (or whatever) is $200 more plus delivery ($50).
