My venture in HD ... kind of.

Ive waited, rather suffered, 2 years waiting for just the right TV to upgrade my dinosaur 27 inch SDTV ...
I actually caught the Purolator guy at Lunch time at the depot and begged him to consider stopping by my house 'again' as I just got home fo lunch ... he said "No". I acted pathetic again, stating that I didnt have a truck and couldnt fit the thing in my car ... No sympathy was had ... he either was jealous of my purchase, actually was busy, or was a plasma lover and would not get caught dead helping a new LCD owner :-) I guess that he was busy ... after work I got a friend, with his truck, to help take it to virgin HD soil ... Its all set up and looks fantastic even though IM limited at this point to only 480p content. I cant give a useful review as I am going from SD to a HD set so it would all look good to me. I will say that anyone considering the plunge to a flat panel TV now would be a great time ... it seems that most manufacturers at this years CES are obsessed with making ultra thin flat panels rather than revolutionary PQ upgrades, so you wont go wrong with this years breed of flat panels.
Ive updated my system showcase for anyone interested in getting a look at two quick pics I took ... more later.
Now I just need to upgrade my video source though ... Would it be worth picking up a decent upconverting DVD player ... is there that much of a PQ difference from 480p to an upconverted 1080p signal from a upconverting DVD player. No doubt a native 1080p signal from a Blu-ray would look great but howabout an upconverted DVD ... or shold I just save my cash for a Blu-ray player and forget the short term upconverting DVD player ..
Thanks.

I bought an Oppo 970H DvD player 1.5 years ago. At the time I got it, I thought it did a fair job of upconverting to 1080i. After comparing it to the Toshiba A3, the A3 does a much better job of upconverting my standard DvD's.
If you need SACD, DvD-A or Divx capability you might consider the Oppo 980 or 981.
You might also see if there are any deals on the HD DvD players. (Since the Warner announcement) Just use that for an upconverting player till you get your Blu-Ray. The A3 (1080i) is about $180, the A30 (1080p) is $250 both come with 10 free HD DvD's still. You would also have the opportunity to take one of your DvD's down to the local store and have it played on the same LCD panel as yours and see what you think.
You could then decide if spending $250 is worthwhile till you get your Blu-Ray.
Just my thoughts
PS The system looks greatWithout music to decorate it, time is just a bunch of boring production deadlines or dates by which bills must be paid. ..... Frank Zappa
