Got a call from my other uncle that he had a Technics table that he wasn't sure what was wrong with it. I went by a little while ago and grabbed it. Brought it home, took the platter off to find the elastic band belt was off and bundled up. Luckily it wasn't broken or stretched, put it back in place and I'm happy to report it works PERFECT.
I'm playing my Chicago album right now.....playing and tracking perfectly. Soooo happy to finally get something working until tax return time. It's ugly but it gets the job done for now. I'm using the tape monitor output as suggested by mhardy for playback for now.
It only took three different tables but finally I'm in the cool Polkies club.

Congrats!
I just updated my system page to include my dad's turntable (that I now have!)
I guess we're both cool polkies! Where's my cookie?? -
No cookies....they are bad for you!
I just put in Van Halen Diver Down.....good stuff. Being able to play vinyl now literally just doubled my music library. LOTS of listening to do. -
Ahhhh....VH Diver Down. I remember when that LP came out. That was the first album we played the last day of my (our) 9th grade year before moving over to the High School. "Where Have All The Good Times Gone." Good memories....Richard? Who's your favorite Little Rascal? Alfalfa? Or is it........................Spanky?.................................Sinner.

Yeah, it'll stop in June!
Static electricity is terrible here in the wintertime. Far worse than what I grew up with in Baltimore.
You can ground yourself just prior to picking up the record. I usually tap my finger on the CDP or the amp. The downside is getting a bit static zap! High voltage, low current. Not my favorite experience.
Milty still makes and sells the Zerostat antistatic gun. These do work.

Otherwise, a point-of-use humidifier might help.
You should invest in a good record cleaning "system" if you're serious about licorice pizzas in the long run, I'd say.
The "Disc Doctor" products are pretty good and pretty reasonably priced. Disc Doctor clone brushes are available, too.

The clone brushes are branded "Mobile Fidelity".

FWIW, I use the Disc Doctor products for serious record cleaning (e.g., dump and thrift store finds).
For play-to-play cleaning, I either use an Audioquest carbon fiber brush or an ancient and venerable Discwasher.

An RCM (record cleaning machine) is the best way to clean records, but they're fairly pricey. -
Thanks Mr Hardy...
$100 for an anti-static gun seems a bit on the pricey side. I don't think at this point it is "if" I get serious in vinyl it's a matter of "when" i get serious into vinyl. I have a little notebook here with a list of all the stuff I need including the VPI 16.5 RCM, Brushes, sleeves, solutions, etc. How far I go is entirely dependant on tax returns.
I'm going to try and pick up some anti-static cleaning clothes today.
Does anyone know if there is an optimum humidity my room should be in when listening/storing vinyl? -

I found that if you stick your finger in an electrical outlet as you are removing the LP it cancels the static electricity out.:p
not really
don't try it

Should I unbend a paper clip first and push that in each side?
I've already done that Darla. Last year I had a wet sponge in my hand washing walls after tearing off wallpaper....I thought the circuit breaker was off, went over the wall outlet and boom, I was zapped! -

Does the TT have a ground wire or a screw for grounding on it??
I get the same static if my TT isn't grounded. -
yea it's grounded, already checked that.
-
Then it is definately a humidity thing. I take it you have forced air heat? Always dries the house out in the winter.
An IT guy I worked with told me if you rub your hands together before you touch the TT it may stop the shock and static. -
I just turned the heat off. I'm going to leave it off for a few days, see if that helps.

be sure to balance the tonearm correctly... most people have to much weight on their tonearms. most cartridges usually take around 1 to 3 grams of weight, not much. also set the anti skate to the same as your cartridge weight. you probable at the very least replace the needle. you can find one here.http://needledoctor.comPolkFest 2012, who's going>?
