Expensive "cat ****" coffee beans?

Have I gone loco?

I just saw on CNN a news clip about some kind of coffee bean that is eaten by a cat, "processed" and then, after nature takes it's course, picked back up and sold for a ridiculous amount of coin. Topping 100 smacker a pound.

Supposedly the enzymes change during digestion which breaks down the bean and removes the bitterness.

Let me be the first to say; 1. WTF? 2. That's one coffee I'll NEVER try. I'm into exotic foods, but damn.

I haven't heard of the cats doing it. I've heard of the donkeys and mules in Indonesia or Africa or some place like that eating the coffee cherries and the coffee pits, aka beans, being dug out of the pooooo and then cleaned, roasted, etc. 100 clams a pound sounds about right from what I remember.

I could have sworn they said Indonesia, but I wasn't 100% positive. Crazy idea for sure. Who thought to do this and I can't imagine why someone would try this to begin with. Let alone be the first person to try it.

    Yuck.

Well, you have to rinse the beans thoroughly after they've been processed, fer gawd's sake !!!

.... or at least wipe them off a bit with a damp paper towel (removes any excess hair, etc that might taint that rich, nutty flavor).

Definitely something you'd want to grind at home, for extra freshness..
