Speaker Configurations...

Different speaker configurations:
1. 2-way design
2. 3-way design (passive)
3. 3-way design (active bass)
4. Sealed enclosure
5. Ported enclosure
6. Passive radiator enclosure
7. Coherant sound (axial tweeters, etc)
8. Line source array
9. Electrostatic
10. Electrostatic with bass drivers

Of all the above speaker types, I find the biggest difference in sound comes from going from a 2-way speaker to a 3-way speaker. With a 3-way design, the bass becomes more solid and the mid-range becomes more clear - my opinion.

I've listened to electrostatics a few times and they are magical. But, for me, they just don't have the punch/power of a good driver. Trade-offs.

I'm not sure which speaker configuration is optimum. I just seem to like the passive 3-way speakers best.

Thuoghts/comments?

Sometimes I think less is more. Some of the smoothest speakers I've ever heard were 2-way, paper-coned systems. I have no technical understanding as to why---but my guess would be a simpler crossover.

well, not actualy listend to any but i want to add coment on a single driver transmition line speakers. if you think about it apart from any strange harmonics in a poorley desighned transmition line they are the simpilest type of speaker having no components apart from a cable between the amp and transducer unit itself. thereby hi-fidelity

A three way system can typically provide clearer midrange, but that does not always apply.

I find the biggest difference is going from a poor speaker to even a mediocre one. That's the biggest bang for buck, no doubt.

umm, you missed single-driver (fullrange) systems.
You also missed horn-loaded drivers (edit: front horns, back horns, pipes, and TLs).

for info on the former, see www.fullrangedriver.com as a starting point.

for the latter... well... maybe take a look at: http://www.audioheritage.org/intro.htm or
    http://www.edgarhorn.com/ (edit: also see www.t-linespeakers.org , http://www.geocities.com/rbrines1/ , and http://www.quarter-wave.com/ )

crossovers (edit: especially complicated ones) are very often not your friend...

Not to mention you missed the most important design type: Kabuki!
There is no genuine justice in any scheme of feeding and coddling the loafer whose only ponderable energies are devoted wholly to reproduction. Nine-tenths of the rights he bellows for are really privileges and he does nothing to deserve them. We not only acquired a vast population of morons, we have inculcated all morons, old or young, with the doctrine that the decent and industrious people of the country are bound to support them for all time.-Menkin
