Polk debuts the new SurroundBar360!
http://www.avrev.com/news/0108/03.polk225.shtml
Polk Audio is debuting the $1,199.95 SurroundBar®360 DVD Theater: a two-piece surround sound system that includes a single, attractive SurroundBar 360 multichannel loudspeaker (44 1/2" W x 4 7/8" D x 4 1/8" H) and a separate, compact electronics console (16 1/2" W x 11 1/2" D x 3 3/16" H) that contains an integrated DVD/CD player, SDA® signal-processing amplifier, AM/FM radio, and a host of digital, analog, USB, and video inputs.
The SurroundBar 360 speaker is Polk Audio's response to consumer demand for true surround audio and deep bass from a single cabinet. The sleek, gloss black enclosure, which is designed to subtly complement all flat-panel displays, delivers full 360 surround sound thanks to Polk's proprietary SDA® (Stereo Dimension Array) technology that the company first introduced in its flagship 1980s speaker modelsloudspeakers that are still actively sought after today for their low distortion and enveloping sound.
Taking the SDA concept into the 21st century, the SurroundBar®360 DVD Theater features a new active version of SDA technology that combines signal processing and acoustical geometry to create 360 surround from the SurroundBar®360's eight drivers. Polk's patented Power Port® Bass Venting System ensures that the SurroundBar®360 supplies clean, low distortion bass without the clutter of an external subwoofer.
"Consumers who invest in a high-definition flat-screen display understand the difference between average and superior performance, which is why the original SurroundBar compact speakers are such a hit with end-users," commented Al Baron, Product Line Manager, Polk Audio, Inc. "Now, with SurroundBar 360, we can offer these same consumers an equally impressive soup-to-nuts amplifier/processor with all the necessary ingredients for high performance home theater without the endless clutter of boxes and cables."
The SurroundBar 360 DVD Theater electronics console features HDMI high-definition video output and uses Faroudja DCDi2 upconversion to turn any S-Video or composite signal into high-definition video 480p, 720p, and 1080i resolution.
The SurroundBar 360 DVD Theater also displays and enhances digital still pictures in JPEG and Kodak Picture Disc formats. The USB input makes attaching digital photo sources and MP3 players easy and intuitive.
DTS Digital Surround and Dolby Digital DVDs are both accommodated, as are MPG2, MPG, CD, CD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, MP3 at resolutions up to 384kbps VBR (Variable Bit Rate).
The speaker enclosure is magnetically shielded, so it can be mounted as close to the display as conditions dictate.
Included in the package are four cradles (two low, two high) for stand-mounting the speaker, a single 15-foot console-to-speaker cable, six-foot composite video cables, nine-foot power cord, an on-wall mounting option, dipole FM antenna, loop AM antenna, quick-start guide, owner's manual, and remote control.

I can tell you from a retailer's perspective....finally! It will be so nice to be able to show casual consumers an all-in-one solution for Polk, instead of..."This is the Polk SurroundBar (standalone). Now you will also need a subwoofer, a receiver, and a dvd player too." About this time the customer often says,"Oh...do you have any of them Bose 123 things?" or "Eh...I guess I'll just take the tv by itself then." Looking forward to the new SurroundBar360 for sure!

The Surround Bar50 was a huge step beyond the original, let alone the DSP version.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

I think it would be neat if the could find a way to integrate a wireless network adapter and let you stream video or at least audio from your PC or another server, kinda like the PS3 and 360 do today. Sure there are plenty of other devices out there that can do this, but I think that would truly make this an all inclusive product.
It probably wouldn't cost that much to include, and would be something that sets this apart from the other products like this out there... -
This is really cool. I am a 2 channel music lover... and so I have no surroundsound anything. Everytime I think about it, I realize that I have to get a receiver as well as the speakers. I am not going to buy a Bose system, or some cheap HTIB, but now that this thing is all-in-one, it seems more attractive for people like me that are serious about music, but still want better sound from the TV. (right now I use 2 channel for HT... but would be nice to have all 5.1 channels) It is small and compact... it has Polk's name on it, not Bose... so this is pretty cool.

It is really nice to be able to stream content to the living room. I think with the quantity of game consoles that can do this, along with the increasing integration of PCs as part of an AV system make it redundant to put it in a system like this though. Also, while it might not cost much in the way of parts, the software development and (probably more importantly) the technical support make it much too costly. -
Yes... This is a Bose and HTIB competitor, it's not in the same market as that.
I have a PC 2 channel system, and would not care if the surroundbar can't stream. I would buy it to watch movies in surroundsound so I can leave my PC system for serious music listening. -

Wow, that is neat! When is the estimated time for it to hit the market?

Did I read "SDA Technology"!?!
Yep, all of the Polk SurroundBar items use SDA. That's how it makes such a big soundstage. -

That most likely would be the original SurroundBar, without the electronics. This item was just announced, with no info even on Polk's site yet.
