H/K with Polk

Hey Polkies quick question. Would the Harmon Kardon Avr 144(rated at 30 watts x5) be good to pair with some polk audio r50's. It seems weak but I hear it can deliver some clean power. If you can please offer some suggestions

Some may tell you that's plenty of power...but as someone who has a 50wpc HK and finds it only "adequate" in driving the R50's I'd encourage you to look at the 247 and up. Check out the harman online auctions on ebay...you may be able to find a 247 that may fit your budget. If you can live without HDMI audio the 245 is an option as well.
No matter how small your room or how softly you listen to your R50s you're going to end up replacing a 30wpc HK receiver. Esp if you stick around here.
Good Luck! -
Hey thanks for the reply. I am also adding a powered sub to handle the low frequecies which is what I hear sucks the power out of the reciever. Is that true how much will the subwoofer help me. Room dimensions are 10Wx18Lx8h.

The 245 has HDMI switching. I purchased a refurb off of ebay and it makes a excellent pre-amp.
Roca, yes a sub would help, what's your budget?"He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you." Friedrich Nietzsche -

harman/kardon and Polk are a great match...
oh, you're talking about modern h/k and Polk :-P -

From the Gordon Miller Music hifi catalog, ca. 1977 (AFAIK they only did one).
EDIT: Notice that the system advertise features the Philips GA-312 tt (quite standard for that price range in those days at the better emporia), but shows a photo of the (more expensive) GA-406 automatic :-P -
this is one old ad, the Polk monitor 7 later added a 10" passive.. those are very early mon 7'sPolkFest 2012, who's going>?
Vancouver, Canada Sept 30th, 2012 - Madonna concert  -
Look a bit more closely... that's a 10" PR, but it's uncoated... it's old, alright, but it's not the oldest old. The 8" PR on the very original Model 7 was noticeably smaller on the front baffle.
Here's the original from a ca. 1976 brochure I have (Wetherdsville Road corporate address). Compare the "fit" of the 8" PR on the 7 in this photo to the 10" PR in the ad posted before. -

I have made my decision and I will be going with the H/K avr 146 to accompany my polk R 50's(good deal at Fryes) and the Dayton Audio sub 120(also a good deal parts express). I am sure I could get a better system but that is what my modest budget allows for now. Let me know what you think my romm is 10WX18LX8H

HK direct on Ebay. Just be patient when bidding. It's a refurb but has been awesome.

+1 on the 6 series I got from them on the cheap-Ignorance is strength -

I am going with the H/k avr 146 to go along with the polk R 50's and dayton audio sub. I am going to get a refurbished one but it comes with the factory warranty. I can't wait to hear this little combo.
