I noticed that there is a "convert to apple lossless" option in iTunes that you can select for any of your music that is lesser formats. Have any of ya'll see this, or no if it works? It seems like a stretch, but who knows?

Converting from a lossful format (i.e. mp3) to Apple Lossless does not magically restore the music file. Best to rip into Apple Lossless initially either from the RAW file (unmolested) or from the original CD.

That's what I figured, but I thought it was just a weird option for them to include.

I tried it on some more lossy files and I feel like they sound better than the original. Not lossless, but better.

+1 to what fatchow said. Start from the original CD if you can. I made the decision about a month and a half ago and deleted every bit of downloaded music I had(over 5,000 songs unfortunately) and decided to start buying CD's and building a real music collection.

And no, it wasn't because I was worried about being caught, that was only a part of it. The quality of downloaded music is absolute garbage compared to lossless formats.

Zingo, if you have the chance to convert your collection to lossless from the original CD or raw file I highly suggest it.

My problem is the same thing you are facing. I have some music that I lost the CDs for and what not and all I have is the lesser version. I have been buying CDs for the albums I want to replace, but I don't feel it is worth if for only a few songs I like on an album. Any new CDs I get are loaded uncompressed, but that doesn't help me with my endless backlog...

Since I'm a recent convert to iPod and avoided the original MP3 craze for the most part, I started fresh with lossless. My only problem is that an 80GB iPod ain't quite enough, especially if my planned system upgrades work out this year an dI start to focus on more music.

I did the same thing. All mp3's from the Napster era have been deleted. Not only did the mp3's of that time sound like crap compared to lossless, they sound like crap compared to Lame mp3's. I spent a small fortune last year replacing the music that was worth replacing. I use Lame mp3 or apple lossless for my iPod and FLAC for everything else.
