August Rush

This is probably not the type of movie that most here would like, butI just went out and saw August Rush last night and if you're in the mood for a feel good movie, this is definitely it.

It's about a kid that was put up for adoption but holds onto hope that his parents are going to come back for him. In everything he does, he FEELS music and as time goes on you see that the kid is a musical prodigy (his parents are Keri Russell - Juliard Cellist, and Jonathan Rhys Meyers - rock musician who have a somewhat unintentional one night stand).

Robin Williams is in this but not at all his usual over the top irritating self. When I saw all the previews for this movie I had a totally different idea about the type of character that he was in the movie, but it's still good to see him in something other than his version of crazy.

There are some awesome musical parts of the movie such as when August plays a guitar for the first time and if there was a soundtrack of JUST that for the entire disc I would love it........

Maybe it's because I don't know how prodigy's work, but the one time I had an "um, ok" moment was when he first saw a little girl playing the piano, then ended up writing hundreds of pages of sheet music......nonetheless, it was always fascinating to see August playing.....

It can be a tear jerker at times, but I think the movie was awesome and will DEFINITELY be getting it when it comes out on DVD.

The ONE thing about this movie that I think we can all agree with though, is FEEL THE MUSIC!!!!!!!! For so many of my friends that don't understand why I like some types of music.......that's the easiest way to describe it. Music shouldn't just be heard...........it should be something that is much more than that.

Once you feel the music, you will understand..........

I saw it when it first came out. I enjoyed the movie, but the soundtrack was great and definately made for a feel good type movie.

It was well worth seeing and will be purchased when it comes out.

I haven't heard the soundtrack, but my cousin bought it and said that it doesn't do the movie justice.

I know there are people that play the guitar like that, but in the theater we were at it sounded so dynamic I almost got chills..........

Sorry - meant to say the soundtrack while the movie was playing. Not the CD of the soundtrack....

Anyway - it sounded great in the theater I was in, it should sound awesome at home.

Hmmmm, i haven't heard of this movie.. sounds like it might be a indie movie.. which I really enjoy most of the time. On Brett's review, I'd go check it out.

Are there any explosions in the movie? LOL Anyone get hurt, or even maybe a paper cut? :p

Beautifully done movie. I won't give any spoilers.. but if you like music... then go check it out. Music in the main star if you will in the movie.

I sure hope this flick doesn't get lost come awards time. I hope it doesn't get overshadowed by say... Transformers or some other movie.

Great acting, storyline, and the music is all so well weaved together.

I give it two thumbs up!

I know this is an old thread, but I just watched this movie last night and wanted to share.

I was taken away with the music and some of the sound effects. Granted its not action movie type of sound effects, but they just sounded so good.

My wife watched this on her own a few months ago, and she kept raving to me how much she liked the music in it. She kept prodding me to watch it. I know her idea of music, and wasn't really in all that much of a rush, but she surprised me-- it had some classical, some acoustic guitar, and a bit of rock and on my 'sounding so good' HT rig it just made the movie, to me, awesome. My wife didn't even complain when I had the volume up louder than she normally allows. I couldn't stop watching and listening to it. Awesome.

As far as the plot-I think they could have left the sheet music writing part out until after the boy had at least a primer in how to do it. Just didn't make sense. Otherwise it was a good feel-good movie.

I also recommend this one, since mmadden revived the thread! A bit cheesy and/or obvious at times, but well worth the effort!

I have this one over on the shelf. I've not watched it yet. With these recomendations I may have to put it to the top of the stack. I have about 200 + movies I've never watched. It's nice to have that kind of video library where you always have a good movie to pull out when the urge hits.

    One of my favorites --

And the CD soundtrack although not perfect is PLEASANT to listen to - very well recorded, particularly in the guitar and choir parts.
    - Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit.

I'm going to buy the HD-DVD version (only $10 shipped at DD) as its hybrid and has the Dolby TrueHD 5.1 mix. The BR ver is about $28.

FYI, we watched it in SD on Cinemax OnDemand (or maybe it was ShowTime OD)

EDIT--HD-DVD ver is no longer avail at DD. :(

Well, I managed to take myself away from the postwhoring for a while tonight.:p

I rented this the other day and just watched it earlier...it was a really good movie. Very well put together, and definitely a great feel good movie. The soundtrack was excellent...very good music all through the whole movie. The orchestral parts were excellent...as well as all of the various guitar parts. I just really love how music was really the main theme of the movie...even taking precedence over the characters at times. I really liked how they made a lot of the background sounds that you hear in everyday life into music.

I agree with some of the previous comments to some extent...the whole idea of picking up the guitar and he's instantly badass on it was kind of cheesy, but goes well with the whole concept of him being a music prodigy.

Overall it was very well worth watching. I'm planning on buying this one sometime. I highly recommend it. A solid 7.5/10 in my book.

I generally liked the movie but there were some cheesy moments. I've always liked Kerri Russell (have to check out Waitress if you haven't already) and Freddie Highmore, although I think my favorite performance from him is still the first time I saw him, which was in Finding Neverland. My favorite musical moment in August Rush was definitely when Leon Thomas III (Arthur) performs "Father's Song" the first time his character meets Evan/August. Reminded me of a young MJ. :)
