Base Management candidate or not.....

Is my set-up a likely candidate for base management?

Without using BM, my sub woofer output jack on my AVR sends out a signal in TV, stereo, DVD modes....I have read a Polk article (BM and Subwoofer connections) "Some receivers do not send out a signal to the sub out jack in stereo mode. Not good" So I'm good here.

It goes on to say "in the vast majority of receivers, the SW output jack is low-passed flitered thats blocks sound above a given frequency from getting out of the sub out jack" I've emailed Pioneer to see if my sub jack is filtered. TBD

I'm not sure if I am getting optimal performance from all my speakers right now and need some sound (parden the pun) advise.

General usage of my set-up is 50/50 audio/video

I don't see a sub listed, but I'm assuming you have one that matches the RTi's.
IMHO, I like going the polk way, for the simple fact that you DON'T lose the sub in
multi-ch., but you GAIN it when dealing with 2 ch.
    To me it sounds better.
Don't be surprised if you see recommendations for an amp(not from me)
but like I said, your rigs above mine in the food chain.
    Good luck
I refuse to argue with idiots, because people can't tell the DIFFERENCE!

I am quite certain you can manage your sub pre-out signal...MCACC has probably chosen "large" for your fronts and center. At this setting, you can not adjust the hz for your sub pre-out.

My guess is you need to go into set up mode and select "small" for your front channels. By doing this, you can adjust the hz setting...thinking around 80hz...some might suggest higher.

    Hope this helps.

As for base management we are all candidates, I know I have a SMS-1 on my wish list.

I suggest you get a Radio Shack SPL meter and download the subwoofer test tone CD from realtraps. You could also use a setup CD like Avia. You should first set you speaker levels if you have not already done so. Then run the sweep on your room and see what your problems frequencies are, you will have some but don't worry too much. Try different configurations on your system, sub placement, adjusting the phase on the subwoofer if it has one, crossover setting and pick the setup that sounds best to you.

The Pioneer will still use the crossover setting for any speakers set as small, like the surrounds. I use my setup for all my TV/Music/Movie needs. When watching TV in stereo the sub sometimes comes on and sometimes it doesn't. I have not determined a pattern other than it seems higher volume will turn it on more frequently. If I keep it quiet it ususally doesn't come on.

FWIW before I got my amp I crossed my RTI-10s at 80Hz and would recommend the same for your setup. Since I got the amp I run the RTi-10s full range, left the crossover at 80 Hz for the rest and put the sub in 16 Hz mode. I am happy with the sound but my room has a several peaks and valleys that base management would help. Have fun!
