Tim McGraw - "Let it go" CD

So, after finally figuring out who sang this beautiful song ["suspicions"] on the radio I jump into the truck, head on down to my favorite music store and purchase this album. On the way home I'm thinking about how good this would sound on my rig and not over the radio with a smile as wide as the Mississippi river. I start speeding down the highway just to get home quicker and get my ears on this song I have recently come to love over the radio.

I run upstairs, turn the rig on, plop the CD in, settle down in "the spot". When I hit play on the remote, I skipped to song #5 which is the song suspicions that I have been yearning to hear. When it comes on, I jump up to see what's wrong with the rig. I thought I blew something the night before and maybe I didn't notice. Checked all wires, adjustments...all were flat and connected as usual. Couldn't figure out what was going on.

So, I took out a reference SACD to play and confirm my rig was on the up and up. No problems there, none at all. Scratching my head, I decided to try this new CD in a different player. Hit song 5, play. Same damn thing.

Muddled instruments. Base that sounds like it's coming from the shittiest bargain speaker on a Blue Light Special set of speakers a K-Mart. Unnatural reproduction of the highest frequencies, overponderance of vocals and no real musicality about it whatsoever. Just a plain shallow sound. This song actually sounded better on the radio.

So, $16.99 later I have a now BAD impression of this song I love and a new CD that sounds like a muffled **** from a 600lb lady sitting down on a bean bag. If this is what I am getting from new CD's, I completely understand why folks are going for convenience and why Hi-Fi is slowly dying. :(

The rest of the album is better. Not reference or anything, but not as bad as that song.

Now, I have heard that this song, "suspicions" was originally written or sung [maybe both] by Eddie Rabbit from back in the day. I barely remember the song by Eddie Rabbit, if I do at all, from when I was a kid. Regardless of what I remember, I really dug this new rendition by Tim McGraw. I wanted to buy it from the very moment my ears got a taste of it.

Well that's about all I have to say about it.

Sad in NC.......

Ya, it does sound unnatural. I've heard worse, but it is a weird recording. The other song I was unhappy with was "If You're Reading This". Amazing song, and I know it's live, but with a good system it's a little hard to listen to. Adding a studio version would have been a good idea.

Well, I just got done processing the hell out of this album and NOW it's much better. I had to pull out all the stops on this one. Contour, Spectral tilt and many many changes across 30 bands, for each channel. I usually HATE touching the "knobs of sin", but I just couldn't bear the sound unprocessed.

Listened to the album again. Good stuff. The song "suspicions" was greatly improved, but still lacking sound quality as compared to the rest of the album. Go figure. The one song I bought the CD for.

As for song #14, "If you are reading this"? Sounds fantastic [heavily processed]. The Tyler's I have can really make live music pop. I think that's the best asset they have going for them, so I am at a loss as to why it might sound hard to listen too. Then again, my signal [this time] was heavily processed so that might explain it.

I believe this is the third time this year I have activated the EQ or messed with anything other than a flat signal. This is one of the few albums that IMO require some fine tuning. You can't take away my audiophile card yet. This CD made me do it! :D

Wow, that's really sad to hear. I'm not extremely fond of that song, though I do like it, but I do like a LOT of other songs by Tim McGraw, especially "If You're Reading This." I guess when I'm listening to songs like that, it puts me in this more emotional, reflective mood so I'm not being as analytical of the music itself. However, I've not listened to either on a CD.

How did you process the CD? Did you rip it to your computer and use some piece of software to make it more listenable, or just use components in the signal path in your rig?

I EQ'd it thru a Furman dual channel, 30 band EQ and my pre is a Carver C-16 that can further manipulate the sound.

OK, something's fishy. The start of song # 12 on this CD, "Comin' Home" and certain passages sure does sound like another song. Note for note. I can't put my finger on it, but I know I have heard it before.

    Anybody recognize it?

Ha, I'm glad you brought this thread up again, 'cause I had a question for you and totally forgot about it!

You said If You're Reading This was the last one on the CD, but I was in the store the other day and that song's not listed on the CD. Is that like a hidden bonus song?

I'll look up the other one and see if I recognize it.

Yeah, I totally don't recognize that song at all.

Are you a fan of country? I supposed that you happened across the song "Suspicions" quite by accident and bought the CD just for that. But if you're listening to the rest of the CD and recognizing some of it......it makes me hope you're a country fan. Seems as though we're few and far between on this forum. At least fans of the more contemporary country. We must needs be stickin' together! :D
