I don't know much about the Sony but the Samsung 1200 is supposed to have excellent PQ and also a great up-converter for SD-DVD, I think it has the same reon chip that the Toshiba HD-XA2 has for upscaling.

Where did you get it from, Thuchien, and does it come with freebie BR discs (if so, how many)?

Is the 1400 newer, older, better, worse? I see it on Amazon for about $300, and I see the Sony BDP-300 for about $300 new as well.

BTW, for anyone looking to get into HD-DVD, Amazon now has the A3 + 10 free HD-DVDs (2 in box, 3 more pick-ems with player, 5 via mail in rebate) for $179.99 shipped. It's simply an awesome deal. . .

Bedroom: Samsung HPR-4252, Toshiba HD-A2, HK 3480, Signal Cable, AQ speaker cable, Totem Dreamcatchers, SVS PB10-NSD, URC MX-850

    1000, 1200, 1400 should be avoided.
They all have playback issues with newer disc's and firmware can't fix it.
Some new disc's simply DO NOT PLAY and will never play.

I've been looking to purchase a Blu Ray machine to be format neutral now that I got sucked in to the PQ differences. Picked up the A3 since it was cheap and that started the ball rolling.

But after many, many, many information gathering sessions there are only 2-3 players, all $599+ that have the stuff to be future proof somewhat. All cheaper players lack, will always lack something.

Me I'm just gonna wait it out a few months, the CES show is coming and maybe announcements will be made that a standard will now be in place for all new Blu Ray players, which is lacking now.

Damn, that's too bad. I was this close (very close) to pulling the trigger on a 1400. Since the authorized seller takes paypal, and I have money in my paypal account, it would've been a painless purchase.

Might hold off until/unless some 1400 owners speak up on its behalf. Thanks for the forewarning, John.

The Sony is an excellent BD player and puts out lossless sound via HDMI and analog 5.1, which sold me. However, I assumed it would upscale, but I can find no reference in the manual or menu in the player that allows you to modify it. I'm going to use the Oppo for upscaling and hi-rez audio. We've watched a total of 5 BDs with only one issue on a rental...scene froze. It's a slow loader too. No bass management either...though I've got to say bass playback is excellent controlled by the AVR.

The features I wanted were at least $6-700, so for a budget player it's workable.

    Combo rig:

Onkyo NR1007 pre-pro, Carver TFM 45(fronts), Carver TFM 35 (surrounds)
    SDA 1C, CS400i, SDA 2B
    PB13Ultra RO
    BW Silvers
    Oppo BDP-83SE

I bought on ebay. Yesterday I went to Mongolia at BB I saw they had pioneer elite Blue ray 94 with no power cable no box sale for $400. I bought that one too. I don't have any BR DVD at home so I test with my SD DVD and I don't see a lot better than my Toshiba HD A2 but I read a lot good review when it play BR disc. I can't say any thing until I Netflix send one on Monday. So I will keep one and send one to my father in law. Don't know which one yet.

a lot of people are having problems with players not playing rented HD discs.. scratches and finger prints are a big problem on rented NetFlix discs... so if it won't play in your player.. it may be because the disc is scratched or dirty. try a new disc that you bought instead.

You would think the new players, now in their third generation would be better at reading discs. remember years ago when SD DVD players first came on the market? dirty discs had trouble being played.. by the second and certainly by the third gen of those players.. they had all but solved the problem. HD DVD player in their 3rd gen like the A35 I have been reading up on, has fits playing dirty or scratched rented DVD's.
