Firmware question

I get hardware, oh for the days when there was only hardware....and software....but firmware. Not hard, not soft....but itsn't it just programming? I gather that the ability connect equipment to the computer for firmware updates has gotten important if you want fixes or upgrades. Is this done with USB connection or some other computer link on the back of a unit like RS 232? Any good reads on this subject? Thanks very much. Happies to all.

Depends on the hardware, most can be done over disc if theres a drive, others over a ethernet connection. Most of it is pretty simple. What gets consumers in trouble is faliure to be patient. The players can be updating and going through the processes of doing so, and the consumer will shut it off, pull the plug, etc. And there its goes, you just bricked your player. Its pretty straight forward, just wait until your unit says Download Ok, or Install Complete. Firmware is a good thing, since it can enable new features, fix bugs, etc. Good stuff for sure.

If it ain't broke don't fix it! Now after saying that I did a firmware upgrade for my Outlaw 990. Definite improvement. As pointed out above on some hardware a bad upgrade can take out your equipment. On my Outlaw I had to try 3 times to get the upgrade to take. What do you need to update?

Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
    Thanks

Jumping in here w/ possibly a stupid question.
When I 1st purchased my Denon 1905/785, there was some mention of upgrade via firmware, for when movies start come out w/ 'actual' 7.1 format.
The question is: How do do I update w/out a pc connection-i.e. USB 2.0???

    Please be gentle
I refuse to argue with idiots, because people can't tell the DIFFERENCE!

I think this is where the RS 232 can come in or with an ethernet connection? My question is why FIRMware and not SOFTware.....because it is part of operating system..?? I've read explanations and they never sunk in.
