I finally got the speakers moved into the new house and had time to start fixing them. Here's what they had for tweeters in the things. I don't even know what the things are, but they are fugly and big.

*Goes to call Polk for new tweeters*

I have no idea what tweeters those are. Polk never used tweets like that, and 16ohms is way off for the crossover. Ask for Ken. He will hook you up with the RDO tweets that should replace those. Tell him you are a Club Polk member for the discount;)
Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
    Thanks

That looks like some old POS midrange from the vintage Pioneer CS series speakers in a way. At least the color of it reminds me of them. That was in there for the tweeters? Sheesh...you had nowhere to go but up! Were the holes cut out?
Richard? Who's your favorite Little Rascal? Alfalfa? Or is it........................Spanky?.................................Sinner.

The holes are still usable. The frame and holes where the screws were are still there. It was a real shoddy job, but they didn't cut them too bad. I'll take pictures later.

Tweeters are ordered. Ken was nice. icon14.gif

You better keep those babies in ICU for a while until they get fixed. It's real sad to see stuff like that, but a lot of times it does mean you can get a good deal on the speakers.

Good deal for sure. Just make sure there are no air leaks around those tweeters. It is extremely important.

The only place I think it might be a problem is in the first picture top tweeter opening. That's obviously where they started and "learned from their mistakes" on the first one. :o

We all know the real mistake was not replacing them with the RD0194's.

Now seriously, what would make someone do that? Replacements from Polk couldn't have cost much more than the drivers they put there.

The speakers you bought are usually around $400-$700.
Take the savings. and redo the crossovers too;)

OMG  You would be better off to cut a rectangular opening ...router the edges and flush mount a correctly cut for the tweeters piece of MDF in its place.

It doesn't look like they have gotten into the bezel so he should be OK with the speaker gasket, or speaker caulk.

If you get into woodworking and/or just like to tinker, you should try building those parts back out with wood filler. They can be shaped and sanded and then touch up painted in the affected areas. Hell, I woulda bought them if the deal was right, too. That's not the worst thing ever. If the grills are reasonable, at least you can hide what's behind it. Once sealed off, they should still sound outstanding.

Also, the entire front panel could be resurfaced in black vinyl veneer, formica, melamine, or something like that to completely get them darn near stock looking. If you were close, I'd offer to help with that project as I get into projects like that.

If you are gonna quote a movie ...especially one in my top 10 of all time ...please be accurate. :)

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110912/quotes

[after Butch saves Marsellus from rapists]
    Butch: You okay?
Marsellus: Naw man. I'm pretty ****' far from okay.
    Butch: What now?
Marsellus: What now? Let me tell you what now. I'ma call a coupla hard, pipe-hittin' niggers, who'll go to work on the homes here with a pair of pliers and a blow torch. You hear me talkin', hillbilly boy? I ain't through with you by a damn sight. I'ma get medieval on your ****.
Butch: I meant what now between me and you?
Marsellus: Oh, that what now. I tell you what now between me and you. There is no me and you. Not no more.

Actually, I have no idea what they are supposed to look like under the covers, but they do need some love in some places. I do like a good project myself. I have plenty to go around right now. maybe one of them will get finished. I am in Tejas, but I'm not sure that makes us "close."

I can't wait to hear them with a decent tweeter in them. I can't believe a 16 ohm tweeter was in them.

OMG I can't believe somebody would put those "tweeters" in there! They look like dash speakers out of an old car from the 80's. Seriously! Unbelievable....

Hmmm.....gotta agree that something needs to be done to repair the mounting areas. As it is, there's no way you're going to get a good seal.

I'd try and find someone who knows wood working and see what they suggest to restore the integrity of the baffle. I'm sure something can be done to make it whole again but look at all your options and get it done right.

    Good luck

Can anyone post a picture of the SRS2's without the tweeters on so I can see what it is actually supposed to look like? I did a few searches, but never really found what I was looking for.:o

luckily, living in a new home construction area, scrap wood isn't too hard to come by.

Do they use a lot 3/4" MDF in new construction?? Don't skimp and don't half **** it. Get it done right especially since you literally got them for free. Don't use plywood or 2x4 scraps to fix it.

Find a wood working shop to give you some idea's and maybe they would be willing to take on the project. Don't turn this into a "1 hour" fix, it's going to take some time and patience to do it right and in the long run you'll be much happier and the speakers will perform like they are supposed to.
