Question on RTi 12
I have a set of SDA 1C's. I need to upgrade them and may use them for a surround TV system.I was looking at the RtI 12 as a replacement for the SDA1's in a 2 channel stereo system.
I play rock, or classic rock at concert volume levels (especially live albums)
I have the amp to push these speakers, an Onkyo integra, M-504. An Adcom preamp, Sony XA3ES disk player. I've read you need power to make these speakers work well, I think the Onkyo should do the job.
What i don't know is if it would be a good replacement for the SDA1's.
Can this speaker handle the volume?
What will it sound like compared to the SDA 1's?
Also the Polk site has "NEW" RTi A9..listed....looks like the same speaker to me. I don't know if thats the upgraded RTi 12 or what the story is on that.
Any input on this would be helpfull.

My suggestion would be to rebuild the cross-overs and add a full set of RDO replacement tweeters to your 1C's and forget about the 12's.
I have had 1C's in the past (wish I had them back) and currently have RTi12's in our HT rig...
I'm powering the 12's with 325 wpc...and I was driving the 1C's with 200 wpc...
SDA 1C's hands down -
Can you be a little more specific about what you don't like about the 12's?
Are they just no ware near the sound quality of the 1c's?
Or they just take too much power to run well?
They don't give you the volume, or the sound stage your looking for?
I figure it's going to cost me about 500+ to upgrade the 1C's.
I can get the 12's for about $800-1K
If you feel the 12's don't even come close to the 1C..for sound, and volume..(remember I play these very loud, classic rock stuff) then I guess I should just rebuild the 1C's. -
I don't dislike the 12's...to me they just don't offer the same "quality" of sound the 1C's do...The 1C's have much better mids, much smoother highs, the tweeters in the 12's can be a little bright when driven to load volumes.
The only advantage the 12's have in my book is that they might have a little tighter Bass...not any more, just tighter.
BTW,I have our 12's for sale at $600. where are you located? Maybe a trade could be worked out?? -
Well Mike , Im in NJ...so the shipping costs would be way too much...LOL
But since your selling them..I have to guess your not too happy with them.
Since you say they become "bright" at high volume....probably not the speakers for me...as I stated..I play these 'LOUD"...and love live albums.
If they get "bright" played loud...dosn't sound good.
But these are for a stereo system...not TV stuff..so i don't know if that makes a difference. -
Don't let my opinions sway your choices...I don't dislike the 12's...I'm thinkin of combining our 2 channel rig with the HT set up...That's all.
The 12's will give you very good Music reproduction with the right gear behind them...a tubed amp. or pre would tame the "brightness" I was referring to.
I just "prefer" the sound of the older SDA line...The 1C's and the RTi12's are two completely different animals, they each have there own sonic signatures.
I would think in your local you could get your listen on some 12's pretty easy. -
Mike..i don't have a tube amp..I'm using a ONKYO integra M-504
Which is basically a dual mono block....that weighs a ton...LOL
I don't even know what it really puts out.....150wats plus is my guess.
The amp is hugh with 2 big meters.
I would think this amp could power the 12's without a problem.
I was only thinking about the volume that I would push this too......
If they can't handle "concert" level volume.....then they don't work for me.
And if they become over bright at that volume..thats not a good thing.
I don't need Eric Clapton being over "Bright" on the live Cream albums...LOL -
Polk..Im in Ocean county.
