We bought a PS3 at the beginning of August, I believe, and it does a1n excellent job with upconverting standard DVD's, even the ones I've burned.
Your TV will also have an impact on the quality of the upconversion.
I have a Sony KDF-E4210, which has 720p as it's native resolution, I have the PS3 output 1080ito the tv.
I believe your TV is 1080P, so your Bluray discs should look stunning.(assuming they were transferred well)
I don't remember what firmware the PS3 was at the time, I think the firmware now is 2.01 though. -
My PS3 will upconvert regular dvd's to 1080p

up-converts as well as my oppo did.

Current firmware is 2.10 and includes profile 1.1 capability (PIP commentary etc.). The original upconversion update didn't 'fix' any issues as previously the ps3 didn't have DVD upconversion capability. The firmware update enabled upconversion on the console and it looks great.

PS3 will support HDMI 1.3 soon... -
ps3 already is 1.3 compliant. question is, will it ever be PROFILE 2.0?

Can't think of another player that is more web capable than the ps3. When studios start producing blu-ray profile 2.0 disks, seems like the ps3 should have the hardware via another firmware update to handle downloading/buying stuff and whatever else the studios want to push over the web to media players. Seems like just another marketing opportunity for the studios to get people to buy and use gimmicky stuff for a movie. Not something I'm interested in, but I guess there are people out there that can't get enough supplementary stuff for their favorite movie.
