McAlister Audio tube amplifier, power supply and preamplifier for sale. I put around $1800 in it including shipping. Prices are much higher now on the McAlister website. Asking price is $500 for everything, shipped in 48 US, as is with problem. Add an extra $50 for shipment to Canada.

This setup has a problem. I purchased over a year ago, received and noticed although the sound was good, it was not powerful like everyone elses units I heard of. I sent it back to McAlister. He found a bad connection, fixed it, checked out and sent it back. He said I was getting almost no power without the connection and it was now fixed. When I received it back it had broken speaker posts due to shipping. This was a simple fix so McAlister just sent me the replacement posts. I've been too busy to mess with it until yesterday when I put the new speaker posts in. I powered up the amp, heard a crack from inside the amp and powered down.

The fix is probably simple and cheap. Worst case it would have to be sent back to McAlister. He is cheap, but slow... He is great to work with though. My guess is something inside is touching something else because you hear the crack when the high voltage section comes up. It is all point to point wiring. I've never actually tried the preamp (was waiting to use with the amp).

The thing is, I'm just not into it anymore. I ended up with some pretty nice Manley gear and wouldn't swap it out even if this gear worked perfectly. I just don't have the time to dick with it any more.

This equipment is built like industrial test equipment but supposedly sounds pretty special.

I hope so. Someone will get a kick out of this stuff I hope. Just didn't work out for me. I did check out some old documents and I found the prices were lower back when I bought mine than what is on the website now. I updated the amount paid in the ad.

    Hi Victor,

I had followed the McAlister talks from you, Norm, and Rich. If I manage to get to the head of the queue, then I will have a chance to own and listen to it :-) Hee hee, I plan to trouble shoot the problem myself first because it is wire to wire. It is going to be a fun and rewarding project.

Hi Fred! Congrats on your acquisition. I had the previous design PP150. The bias pots were internal; one had to remove the bottom cover to access. I was watching the volt meter while adjusting and my pinky finger strayed where it shouldn't have. Talk about a wake up call... That amp had some bass authority. It kicked a Rotel RB1090 off my rack.

IIRC the later amps used a 6AX4 damper diode as he was having trouble getting the thermal delay tubes. Peter claimed input tube life was 20K-30K hours, and the output tubes 5K-7K hours. He had told me he was running the output tubes around 80%. Tube rolling won’t have much effect with his amp. His point to point wiring improved with the second design amp you are getting, but should have been better. IIRC Victor’s or Norm’s amp had something touching from rough handling during shipping.

Have fun! Tell Peter I said hello.

    Hi Rich,

Long time no chat!! Using a 6AX4 diode damper is indeed a very clever way to obtain the best of SS rectification and slow warm up. Since you mentioned that not so pleasant biasing experience, I wonder you still remember the bias point :-)

After a few fiddlings, the preamp is up and running. Minor work done included:
    1. One power transformer was happily swinging. Found the missing screw in the foam and screwed that back in.
    2. While I had the chassis open to tighten the screw, I did a casual inspection and found the safety ground was detached from the ground pin of IEC connector. Solder it back.
    3. Followed the amp section wiring and found the 2 channel's cathode resistors were different. Judging from the way the resistance values were derived (by paralleling resistors), I added a resistor to match the bias for both channels.

Not so much of any words on impression as it has been driving a T-amp with 2 bench speakers. I will do that in a separate thread once it is hooked up the main gears.

Hee hee, working on it :D
The amp had the same problem as the little brother, the 6AX4's heater transformer, the delay transformer, and a tag board were free "swinging". The nuts were nowhere to be found, and the screws were trapped inside the output transformer pot. It took a longer than I want to get all squared out. So far, no high voltage zap, only a few metal cuts. I am taking the time, so progress is kind of slow but sure :p
