I Am Legend ** SPOILERS**

Just got back in from seeing this and so I thought Id jot down some impressions I came away with.
First off, this movie SUCKED! I mean it blew dog!
There is almost zero backstory. There are flashbacks that give you a basic overview of what happened but you never actually get to see anything much happening. All you know is that some woman found a cure for cancer so naturally it mutated and killed the whole world.
There is a great German Shepherd in the movie also that is awesome and you fall in love with it......so naturally it has to die. Not only does it die, but Will gets to choke it to death when it becomes infected. This pretty much ruins the movie for me.
Then there is the whole shakey camera thing going on. Not as bad as Bourne Ultimatum but irritating nonetheless.
You get to see him finally get his wife and kids to the chopper to be evacuated just in time to see said chopper get hit by another chopper that is flying out of control because a bunch of people are hanging from it.
Some Mexican chick and her kid show up out of nowhere near the end with not much explanation only that God told her to come to New York.
The infected people that prowl the night look cheaply made. Not nearly up to snuff with the hype of this movie or the quality of other effects.
Then to top off all this fun and excitement, you get to see Will blow himself up with a grenade to save the Mexican chick and her kid who go on to Vermont and find the survivor colony with the cure that Will finally discovered.
So you have a completely depressing story, a very thin storyline at that, you get to see a beautiful dog killed slowly, lackluster action sequences, sub par special effects and did I mention the depressing part of it? I guess its worth seeing just so you can say you did but Id wait til it comes on FX and watch it for free. Id give it a 3 out of 10.
On a positive note, it is very politically correct - The only white person in the movie is the doctor that was responsible for killing everybody on earth - the black guy is responsible for saving the world and the Mexican girl is going to repopulate the world. How's that for diversity!

Thank you. You just saved me from renting it(eventually). I was under the impression from the commercials that this would be good movie, obviously not.
And IRONICLY, the writers in Hollyweird want a raise?!

This is the first bad review I've read. I've seen nothing but 3 and 4 star ratings from critics."SOME PEOPLE CALL ME MAURICE,
CAUSE I SPEAK OF THE POMPITIOUS OF LOVE" -

That should tell ya something right there.
I admit that Smith did an excellent job acting as always and I can understand how some "artistic" types might like it but for a guy like me that enjoys a good popcorn movie over one that makes an artistic or thought provoking statement, this didnt get it done.polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005

Thanks for the review - I'll skip this one as well. -

I went in expecting... nothing
And came out enjoying it overall...- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -

I saw it on Friday and disagree, I thought it was excellent. I loved the despair that Neville faces, and when he kills his dog, it further adds to just how hopeless the situation is. Richard Matheson's short story is much different from the movie. In the book Neville becomes "Legend" because he's the last (normal) man on earth alive, and gets captured by the new breed of people, and eventually dies in the end.
The movie changes the meaning of Legend to mean he saves humanity by sacrificing himself. Not exactly what I was expecting after reading the book, but I'm guessing that people wouldn't "get it" if that didn't happen in the end.
Overall I liked it, spectacular how they can make a whole city seem empty -- reminded me of 28 days later a little. I think it's worth a rental at least.

I also liked it alot - thought it was a good movie.
-
I might be wrong? But I thought the white woman was just a PR lady doing the interviews and Neville was the one who actually found the "cure to cancer".
Isn't that why he wanted to stay behind and find the cure to the virus? Because he felt responsible?
Maybe I just interpreted it wrong...Ghetto Rig

I loved the movie - saw it in Imax last night. I thought everything was in perfect balance and was not lacking in a single area. The handheld camera got on my nerves once and I found the effects to be fantastic. I also found it to be easily Smith's best actiony performance (hard to top Happyness).
I also thought the storyline was perfect, gave enough so you knew everything important and the rest is left to the audience to kind of figure out.
I actually plan on seeing it again.God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. - Romans 5:8 -
I loved the movie too, except for the dog dieing part. It could have been longer I suppose and they couldn't seem to make up their mind with the critters. Either they are animalistic without society or they aren't, none of this setting traps and solving problems stuff.
I think the lady found the cure, and neville was a military scientist looking for a cure for the cure. -
Well I was lucky enough to view this on DVD this morning. Let me say the bass effects are almost room shattering at points, and the use of surrounds was well done. Very intense scenes, and I thought the PQ was outstanding.
Enjoyed the movie immensely one of the better ones I have seen all year. -
I really enjoyed this movie, as well. I wasn't expecting anything as far as a storyline goes, but WAS expecting to be entertained...and I was.
Of course the scenes with the GT500 were great, Will Smith did a great job (as I think he usually does), and I agree that him having to kill the dog added to it. Sure you grew to love the dog, especially when you saw how he ended up with it, and of course it was heart wrenching (maybe that's a little too strong a term) to the reader, and demoralizing to Neville to have to kill it, but it just added to the deterioration of his situation.
I really wouldn't mind seeing it again.
But one REALLY huge plus to this movie is, particularly when compared to practically every other movie out there, it was CLEAN! The ONLY things in the movie were a few colorful words, but those were very few. I thought that was great. A movie doesn't have to be nasty and chock full of curse words, nudity, and sex to be entertaining.George Grand wrote: »

Just saw this tonight in Imax.....to be honest the movie was just ok. Entertaining, but not so entertaining. It was awesome how they used his own trick on him and trapped him like he did to them just the day before.
What was really amazing though....was the scenery in the movie theater on a Saturday night at 9:45pm. All the college girls back from school going to see the movie....holy yum! And yes, I know who is of age and who is under age, thanks. -
Just saw this. Fantastic movie. Perfectly paced, amazing storytelling. Everything laid out in just the right way to keep it suspenseful, to keep you guessing, keep you on the edge of your seat.
I can usually see why people wouldn't like a movie that I like; for this one, unless the shaky camera REALLY bothers you, or you can't stand seeing a dog die (which is very sad but sometimes movies are sad, that's kinda the point), I can't understand what you'd see wrong about this movie. Sorry if it's not spoon-fed enough for some of you but it's not exactly an episode of Lost or a David Lynch film, it's all right there.
If you like a good suspense / horror movie GO SEE THIS.If you will it, dude, it is no dream. -
I will never see it. I can't stand to see a dog die. I am still recovering from Eight Below.Sharp Elite 70

I watched it last night and was kinda dissapointed that the whole thing seemed like a drawn out Ford commercial, kinda like Transformers was a drawn out GM commercial. In I am Legend, it starts with a GT 500 that has some gracious badging shots and the centercap on the wheel shot with the centercap perfectly horizontal....gotta love it. Then Will Smith drives a decked out Expedition through the whole movie and then the chick/kid come in a Ford Escape. During the whole time the emblems were obviusly displayed and slowed.
Other than that, Will Smith can act anywhere doing anything and he's always top notch. The storyline was just OK and the action was computer over-animated. I would give it a 2.5 out of 5.
I did like The Golden Compass though...I like movies like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Narnia, etc. Maybe it has something to do with me living in Germany for the last three years and being able to tour Europe seeing places that make you feel like you are in a fantasy. Ireland being top on my list! -

Yes but then it wouldnt have been a totally depressing and dispair filled film. If you dont go home wanting to slit your wrists, whats the point. :rolleyes:polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005

I was too.....a friend of mine handed me a dvd last week ....told me it was this movie....I told him I didnt like the crappy shot in movie theaters with heads in the scene and people talking. Nope, he said it was a REAL dvd...and it was....Pretty good widescreen graphics but the soundtrack was 2 channel.
Movie itself was decent ....not the best but watchable for a Will Smith movie. The lions looked really bad...even worse then the Jumanji lions....why would they used crappy animation like that ? The whole mexican girl/young boy parts were strange....They could have really made this movie a lot better .The first rule of Fight Club is you don't talk about Fight Club
