HDMI issue

so I recently got a tv with an HDMI input, as well as an Outlaw 990 with DVI inputs and outputs.
what I initially did was hook my cable box DVI out put to the 990, as well as the OPPO DVD player HDMI output to a 990 DVI input, with the DVI output from the Outlaw going to the TV.
worked fine, but just yesterday, I noticed my DVD player has a periodic flash on the screen, I then noticed that my cable says "your TV will not read HDTV signal, use component cables"
both units work fine through component (of course, the OPPO will not upconvert to 1080 that way, which was the whole point of this )
I tested the cables by going from source right to TV, same results. rules out the Outlaw. used different cables, sam results (I only have one HDMI to HDMI cable without DVI or adapter on one end)
I have 2 DVI to HDMI cables, tried both on the cable box. works for about 3 seconds, then I get the message.
HDMI to HDMI on DVD player right to TV gives me same intermittent flash.
is it possble for something to have hapenned to tracsh all 3 cables?, or can it be the TV's HDMI input?
I know there are many more HDMI experts out there than me, so HEEEELP!!!!!

I don't know anything about the Oppo player but if the cable box happens to be one made by Scientific Atlanta (IIRC), then those have had major issues with the HDTV handshake for years. I'm not sure if the newer ones are better but I've had friends that have gone thru 3 to 5 boxes, gave up, then got satellite and have had no issues. Other brands of cable boxes might work better but again, don't quote me on that. I just remember the SA boxes being crap...especially at first.Richard? Who's your favorite Little Rascal? Alfalfa? yeah, sounds like a handshake issue. I tried to hook up my Denon S-301 to my Westy 19" LCD using HDMI to DVI and it will flash the picture, then go blue.
However, when I go Toshiba HD-A2 HDMI output to my Westy 32" in the bedroom HDMI to DVI, it works like a charm.
Not sure if that means the source is the issue, or the TV. . . but I think one may need to be switched out. I find it weird that the HDMI to HDMI connection (Oppo to TV) wouldn't work, though. There shouldn't be any adapter / handshake issue with that, IMO.Stereo Rig: Hales Revelation 3, Musical Fidelity CD-Pre 24, Forte Model 3 amp, Lexicon RT-10 SACD, MMF-5 w/speedbox, Forte Model 2 Phono Pre, Cardas Crosslink, APC H15, URC MX-950, Lovan Stand

the oppo works, just that annoying intermittent white flash drives me crazy batshit. When I go oppo to tv with hdmi video and audio, the screen and sound flashed (not so through the theater, since the digital cable is doing the audio work)
the Cable box is a scientific atlanta, so thee might be something there. funny thing is, it worked like a charm first couple of times I used it. I did buy relativly cheap cables, but all 3 cables being shot at the same time. I heard that with HDMI, anything is possible since it seems to be so delicate.
luckily I can still use both through component, and of course the theater still sounds kick ****, but the HDMI thing is driving me nuts mainly because I cant upconvert DVD's to 1080 without hdmi (the main reason for buying the oppo in the first placeLiving Room 2 Channel -

Definately a handshake issue. I had similiar problems.
I'm going out on a limb to guess to that your Oppo playing isn't liking the going from HDMI to DVI because the DVI interface isn't as up to date as the HDMI.(I.e. HDMI is 1.3 and DVI can't reference the signal properly)
However, does the Oppo have a DVI out? Try going DVI TO DVI if you can.
Just based from the few personal experiences I had with HDMI it seems that the HDMI signal wants to remain HDMI output to HDMI input and will not work HDMI output to DVI input. However, you could make it work if it was DVI output to HDMI input.
Hope this made even the slightest bit of sense.... -
I had the oppo 981 using HDMI to HDMI into a Sony DG800 receiver, then output of the Sony via HDMI to a DVI Sony display, and never seen that white flash. So maybe there is a handshake issue over DVI though sometimes these HDMI/DVI connections can be tricky. I recall doing a firmware upgrade on my 981 though Im not sure what model youre using. If all else fails then you maybe able to use some sort of external switch.Shoot the jumper.....................BALLIN.............!!!!!

HDMI to HDMI on DVD player right to TV gives me same intermittent flash.
Ok it can't be just a handshaking issue as it doesn't work this way either. I thinking DVD player but not sure can you reset both some how then retry this again.

Update the firmware on the dvd player. Depending when the player was made it could be HDMI 1.2 and your TV is HDMI 1.3.
Is it a brand new TV or did you buy a used TV? If used, it could be vice versa, 1.2 on the TV and 1.3 on the Oppo. -
Seems to be the 980 is 1.2 and the 981 it doesn't say. If you have a 980 do a firmware update.
Found this also on the Oppo site for a 980:
Q: Why does my screen display turned into "snow" after a few seconds of viewing?
A: If you are using the HDMI output of the OPPO DV-980H and the TV screen turns into "snow" after a few seconds of viewing, it is because your TV or projector does not support HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection). Unfortunately there is no workaround for this issue other than upgrading your TV or projector. For more information about HDCP, please visit the official HDCP Web site.
If you have the 981 Oppo released a firmware updated on December 26,2006(not sure when you did your last one)
http://www.oppodigital.com/dv981hd/dv981hd_support.html
It specifically mentions improved HDMI handshaking. Give that a try and report back.
