Feast your eyes on this:

http://www.amazon.com/Roth-Audio-Music-Cocoon-MC4/dp/B000TK1SFM/ref=sr_1_17?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1197477592&sr=1-17

I was seriously thinking about buying one, but I just can't get past the price.

Krell was working on a $1,200 iPod dock. Not sure if it available to the public yet or not, but it looked pretty nice when they debuted it earlier this year at one of the electronics shows.

I don't see the point in spending that much money to play MP3s through your iPod, but then again I don't have gobs and gobs of disposable income either.

I know it may sound weird and outlandish to some of the older members of this forum, but I (and others) have been seeing audio success by running lossless songs off of an ipod dock and through a hifi system.

A little more expensive than the Roth...

    Fatman - iTube 252 - 25 Watt - Valve amp w/iPod dock at $1,750:

The IPOD sound is short of amazing using Apple lossless IMHO.

Isn't there a dock that has a digital audio out so you can let the pre/pro do the decoding for you? I would think that would be mich better than outputing the signal through RCA or a mini.

Know of any laptop PCMI cards that offer a digital out?

Here's a bit cheaper solution (if you can find an ST-70 in decent shape, usually +/- $400) that we use in our home gym to drive a pair of SDA 2Bs.

Needs no preamp and sounds stunning.

They may exist, but I'm not familiar with them.
You can also get a external card via USB with a optical and/or coax out.

DACs with USB are becoming more common. Makes any cheap laptop into a nice audio system using apple lossless or .wav ripping. Even iTunes plus sounds really good -- $10 for a 256kb/sec album without any DRM is not a bad deal

I don't believe there's any digital output from the IPOD just analog audio, S-Video, and Composite video pins.
