2.40:1 Anamorphic widescreen... I loathe thee

Does anyone find these anamorphic widescreens on dvds annoying? I guess I thought when I bought my 16:9 widescreen I was done w/ the black bars. It took me over a year w/ the widescreen TV to finally starting hating the little black bars on 2.35:1 and 2.40:1 movies. Anyone think someday we'll see TV's going from the current widescreen of 16:9 to the wider formats. I cant imagine what a 2.40:1 looks like on a 4:3 TV. I'm all for watching a movie as the director intended it to be watched but jeez where does it end.

If you had a super widescreen TV you'd be bitching that all standard HD programming had black bars on the sides of the screen. There's different widths, there's not much you can do about it.If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Films like that have been shot since the 60's when they wouldn't even fit on most of the theater screens. The 16:9 aspect ratio screen is only an adopted standard for shows and programs filmed in HDTV...not for films. They have no standards and can do whichever they want. If you notice, I think most all of the Disney/Pixar films are in 1.78:1 (16:9) ratio which is cool. Other films here and there and you can always stretch them out to fit if need be. They don't bother me...no biggie. I'm glad to have the full theatrical view.Richard? Who's your favorite Little Rascal? Alfalfa? I had the same problem with my westinghouse 32" lcd. I fixed it by using the zoom feature. Does your TV have that feature?
Good luckI refuse to argue with idiots, because people can't tell the DIFFERENCE! -
Thanks for the tip. It does have zoom but i dont want to alter my pixels. Like I said on a previous chat, the HT sure beats the movie theater any day.Onkyo TX-SR805

Exactly...looks much better in its native resolutionThe first rule of Fight Club is you don't talk about Fight Club -
I want to see the movie as the creators intended. Was glad to see Ratatouille retain its 2.35:1 aspect ratio on DVD. Black bars don't bother me... though in fairness, I'm using a 720p projector and 92" screen, so either way the movie is frikkin' huge.Equipment list:
