Front of the house will be RTi10's and a CSi6. Also a DSWPro600 sub. Right now I have FXi4's for surrounds. I want to move the FXi4's to the rear channel, and get FXi6's for the surrounds. Mostly HT, a little music hear and there. Rear of the house is cramped. Any comments/suggestions?

Should be great. Of course, calibrate everything. Welcome to the forum.

Welcome; that sounds like a great setup. Some people like direct radiating speakers for the rear surrounds, and dipole only for side surrounds. Something you might want to think about.

I guess that was my basic question...I bought the 4's from tweeter, so i can trade them in for the 6's for the sides, and get something different for the rears...but honestly i wouldn't know where to begin, or if i should even really worry about it....

I'm here to learn as well, so please forgive my jumping in.
I was TOLD by the guys at Tweeter that based on my LR size-13'x17'- that 7.1 would be a waste. That said, I'm assuming yours can accomodate it-18'x24' or there abouts????
    Just curious.
    Thanks

I'd stick with the smaller RTi4 and FXi4.

Really? What would be the advantage to direct versus dipole for rears? I've been waiting till after Christmas to buy some Fxi-3's, but now I want to make sure that's the right choice and I'm not missing anything.

I wouldn't know. I don't have any dipoles, but I've read that many times around here.

For rear sound effects, I'd go with the dipoles....they will give a more enveloping sound.

I personally wouldn't get to wrapped up in anything more than 5.1 (unless you had a pretty substantial room) to be honest.

In my travels, dipole has the sound I would prefer if I was into HT setups. Just plain sounds better IMO.

5.1 with dipoles/bipoles is what i would do. you will not be missing anything at all with this type set up.

With Dipoles/Bipoles in a 5.1 setup.....would you mount them on the side or the rear ?

i have mine on the rear walls... because they send sound out in two directions.. sound is going towards you that way if your sweet spot is infront of them on the rear wall. such as sitting on a couch.

proper calibration is almost more important than correct placement. that's the beauty of bi/di pole speakers. a lot of flexibility

MightyHalo - I prefer a side surround for 5.1 but you can go either way.

I use a new set of RTi8's for my rears and replaced my older RT12's. I am under the strong opinion now that I would not take dipole type speakers in my theater if I had the choice again. This is all depending on your room. I plan on eventually replacing my surround FXi5's with another pair of RTi8's. After 3 months of a lot of testing in my theater, I am most disappointed with my FXi5's up on the wall. I continue to be distracted by the sound out of the Fxi5's that just sounds odd at times and even with a 200Watt Outlaw on each one, they don’t sound anything near as nice as say the new rti8's in the rear.

It just takes a lot of space to have floor standing speakers in a 7.1 setup. The next problem is getting them at ear shot. Even my new rti8's are to low on the ground to get over my HT chairs. I’m still looking for a good 2 foot platform to raise them up. The same would be needed for using them as surrounds. I still have future build options of putting them all in a wall column to hide them if I choose.
