So, I sold my Rogue Audio Metis! Yup, excellent! But, now I have no preamp until my new one arrives. In the meantime, I have my Oppo 981HD hooked directly to my amp doing double duty as a preamp and source.
How does it sound? Umm. Like crap.
But at least it's music.
I can't believe I used to listen to music this way. It has absolutely no life. No snap. OR as they say over at stereophile. It does not make me feel like getting up a doing a jig.
Oh well . . . this is just proof I've come a long way. And thanks to many of you fellas here . . . I can never go to a theatre again, never listen to the radio and never listen to a piece of equipment that sounds fine to everyone else. Thanks for ruining my life!
Mike
PS an iPod is supposed to be mobile music. Thanks to you punks, my iPod now has a external amp!

I picked up a nice Welborne Ultrapath bp. I'm really looking forward to hearing it. I am also in the process of working out a deal with a Rogue Audio Perseus to compare to the Ultrapath.

I didn't know a DVD player had volume control.
So you use your ipod to hook up to a pre then to an amp? I am confused... just hook the ipod up to the amp and use the volume on that thing... probably not the best but better than a DVD player. -
It doesn't....there are some who think that bypassing the preamp and going straight to the amp is a 'purer' way to go.
Most digital sources are of sufficient output to drive an amplifier.......I doubt that an iPod does (but I could be wrong)

But if you have no way of controlling the gain, the amp is going to amplify the source to the absolute max that it is designed to do. Wouldn't that damage something, speaker, amp, or more importantly, ear? hehe...
There has to be some kind of volume adjustment somewhere for that to work right? Like a line stage? Maybe the DVD player has a digital volume control.
The ipod would work acceptably for this... just get a Y adapter and use the ipod volume control as the master volume control, assuming there isn't some impedance problem... I think people have done this before though. When I was a kid, I was the last person I knew to get a CD player. I had a turntable, and then I bought a Radio Shack portable CD player. This thing sounded really good, I think there was even an article about it somewhere, but anyway, I just plugged it right into the amp with a Y splitter and used the volume control on the player to adjust the volume.
I couldn't imagine plugging a source into an amp without any control for volume. -

Same here; has anyone actually done this (I mean a source without volume control). This would mean no attenuation from a preamp, or in other words, full blast. Wrong?_________________________________________________

Its not full blast, simply straight up 12 o'clock. Preamps have 12-15 dbs more gain than 12 o'clock.
I would check how much voltage your source has by running it up to 12 o'clock before trying it, but I've done it, and it does lend itself to loud listening. Sort of like riding in a car in the passengers seat at twice the speed limit. The oppo 981 HD has an internal volume control. The major issue is that the bass sounds bloated with the Oppo and the player doesn't have enough power to drive my system to my normal hang on for dear life Led Zeppelin Moby Dick Stariway to Heaven listening levels.

My Metis made the Oppo sound more than listenable, but Metis combined with my Cambridge Audio 840 . . . Well that was just heaven.

I meant I have a headphone amp using my iPod as a source. I carry it all around in a nice pink hipster! -
hehe... that makes more sense. Try the ipod into your amp instead of the oppo though... you might be surprised.

I don't know what the output voltage on the iPod is to know if it would work without additional gain required.
