I tried to provide a review of "the movie" so we could have some input from a polkie who had actually seen it.

I don't know exactly what happened, its just sad that this is the end result.

    I'll give you a hint

    1. It's a movie you should not see if you are insucure in your own faith.
    2. It's not worth the price of admission if you believe everything you read.
    3. If your not into the fantasy type stories like Lord Of The Rings, Harry Potter ect. You would be better off not seeing this one.

    The Golden Compass

    The Golden Bomb

2007's biggest bomb to date, The Golden Compass under-performed and was a big disappointment at the U.S. box office this weekend. Friday night only $8.6 million from 3,528 theaters with anemic per screen average. Weekend estimate for $27 million. Cost of movie: $200+ million. Wildly expensive flop should sink New Line Cinema chairman Bob Shaye's chances to stay on when his contract expires in 2008... Full report coming... :)

I for one, can't wait to see this flick. I have heard nothing but great reviews and despite the Christian circles I run in, and the warnings not to see it because it is written by an atheist, they fail to realize this:

I watch movies to be entertained... not try to with souls to God. If you are so easily upset that it might not line up with Christian views, then how on earth do you live? Jesus walked and talked, ate and drank with prostitute's. Why should we ban a movie, because it doesn't follow our religious beliefs?

Regardless, I wish I had read PT's review, I can't wait to see it. If money and time weren't so hard to come by these days, I'd be there myself!

PM me the review buddy! ;)

I wish I could, it belongs to the Forum Gods now. I typed it up right after seeing the movie, its not anything I saved anywhere else.

Maybe I can still hit the points.

-lots of dialog in the beginning to pay attention to.

-the children's daemons are a very cool part of the story.

-good polar bear Fight Club scene, how the fight ends is probably why the movie got a PG-13.

-no Christians or Gods are harmed in the film, in fact, neither are in the film.

-the whole 'corrupt religious authority' aspect of the film has been done in many other films. Think Equilibrium. The reason I say 'corrupt religious authority' and not just 'corrupt authority' is because the architecture and art of the Magisterium (bad guys) is similar to old churches. However, nobody actually goes to church and there is no preaching. The Magisterium are clearly sinister and murderous, nobody who has seen the movie will confuse them with any current religious sects, despite what a spam email may tell you. :)

-If you wanted to reach a little, you could say Lord Asriel is like Galileo being persecuted by the church.

-Most importantly, the rest of the storyline is very unique, which is what kept me watching.

    -I will see the sequel.

Saw it with my son last night. I enjoyed it. Not the best and far from the worst "fantasy" movie. Will probably continue with the series as they come out. Should anyone be concerned about the "big brother" religious overtones. Of course not. Its a silly discussion.

    Demi,
My question was/is straight foward. I was more interested in who the hell Bob Shaye is and why you seem delighted in his failure. Paranoid as you may be, it was nothing more than than that. You on the other hand assumed it was an attack and responded to an legit question with an attack of your own.

Just so you have your facts straight... I have never claimed to be an Athiest, a Christian, a Buddist, Muslum, Left-wing, Right-wing, or any other polictical or social pariah.
With that, forget I asked the question. It doesn't matter. If I had any idea your panties were going to be tied up in a knot over it, I never would have asked.

Brokeback was actually a very good movie, well directed and very well acted. Subject matter may not be to your liking, but so be it. It was still a sensitive portrayal of a true love story/tragedy. And yes, I am very comfortable with my heterosexual masculinity.

I rarely take the bait on these discussions, so I'm Outa here.;)

I watched enough to know that it was one of the most overblown pieces of crap to hit the big screen in a long time...regardless of subject matter. It went back into the envelope and was mailed back to BB to never be seen in my home again.
