so with the speaker wire to line level converter......i tap those wires to my speaker wires, so my speakers are still being powered by the deck, and the line converter goes to a crossover...then to the amp. ?
do u konw the model number of a good wire to line level converter? -
ya, dude you're going to "tap into" your rear speaker wires (factory wires)... what happens is the "line out converter" reads that signal that is going to your rear speakers, but it doesn't really draw much juice out of the line, so you're rear speakers will still be lets say 85-90% (maybe more -- i'm not really sure on the nitty gritty) as loud as they were before u hooked in the line out converter...
www.crutchfield.com sells a line out converter that is respectable... $29.99 and it'll give you a 0.250 - 0.350 volt (250 to 350 milivolt) rms signal. This is not "great" but its the equivelant of an aftermarket deck with a "0.75 - 1 volt max" pre amp out.
as far as hooking it up -- you dont need an external crossover as long as you be sure to purchase an amplifier that has an ONBOARD / built in low pass filter/crossover. you run an "rca" wire from the line out converter to the amp... and presto, you're done. MTX / Rockford / Coustic / Alpine / Pioneer and your general brands all make mono block subwoofer amps pushing 500 - 600 watts and have built in crossovers.
Personally -- since you're on a budjet, I'd like to recommend a really good "bang for your buck" amp --- the JBL 600.1 -- it can be had on ebay or other places online (www.etronics.com) for about 175 dollars. for a 600 watt mono block amp that is DIRT CHEAP. and its no slouch either -- it'll do a solid 550 - 600 with the car running... its got low distortion (0.05% which is really good for a subwoofer amp), and it has a built in variable crossover (variable crossovers are better than 'on / off' ones because they let you pick the point you want to crossover at instead of being preset at a certain point... it lets you adjust to your specific speakers so that you get a better blending / sound) as well as a 40 hertz bass boost that'll do 6 db's... you'll need a 4 gauge power wire kit for it, that'll run you like 50 bucks online or in stores. the kit will usually have a patch cable (rca cable) / speaker wire / power wire / fuse holder / fuse / connectors / and some wire ties. The Artist formerly known as PoweredByDodge -
