Onkyo Dvd Firmware Question

I have an onkyo dv-sp1000 dvd player, and I've heard there is a firmware update for this unit.
Onkyo supposedly has this on a cd, but from everything I've read, they have the worst customer service dept. on the planet,
and trying to get one from them is like trying to keep a **** to yourself.

Anybody have this firmware update or a suggestion?

thanks,

-Luc

** UPDATE here are some of the various posts where I got the information that their customer service sucks

http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-DV-SP1000-player-silver/dp/B0006LRRZE

http://forums.cnet.com/5208-7596_102-0.html?forumID=60&threadID=275126&messageID=2650292

And so far...I have to say it's pretty accurate.
They don't have an 800 number which means I have to call long distance during east coast business hours,
and pay for the privilege to be routed through their maze of voicemail options.
For a company the size of Onkyo not to provide an 800 number is weak.
For them to charge club onkyo members $10.00 to download a pdf of a product manual is also weak.
Most companies ie yamaha, denon etc. simply have this information available online for free.

I'd search over at AVSforum, they usually have that sorta thing covered, either through a download link or advice on dealing with customer 'no'service.

I've found Onkyo's support to be just fine, always a quick reply. For firmware for my PR-SC885P I contacted Bob Elder, and I had the disc in my hands two days later. Here is his contact info:

Any idea if you can find out what firmware version you have? I'm a rep for Onkyo/Integra and I just looked on our support site (not the consumer one) and the last one they show for it was v1.23 updated on 6/25/06. It's about a 17mb zip file or so. Let me know what you find out.

Edit: Actually, it's about a 5mb zipped file.

Do you have access to all firmware updates, for the Onkyo PR-SC885 for instance? I'm wondering if there are any other updates besides the "main" firmware, there are conflicting reports over on AVS.

Let me check and see and I'll report back. I'm not sure as that unit is in the Pro side (right?) and I'm not sure if I can get those. Mainly just Onkyo and Integra mainstream stuff.

Edit: Looks like all I can get are the Onkyo and Integra versions. The most recent for the DTC-9.8 is dated 11/1/07.

Bob Elder told me thast the 9.8, 875 and 885 firmware is identical. Does it tell you the version number? Mine is 1.04.

    Thanks

I guess the posts I read on other forums were inaccurate.
I'm not sure of the firmware, except the unit is dated 7-04 and has never been updated, so it's probably 1.1
Do you have a link to the site you are referring to? I spent about 30 minutes on Onkyo usa but didn't find anything resembling firmware updates.

    thanks!

I don't have a link for it because it's on the rep side's support site...not the consumer side. It would be something my dealers would get to pass on to the customer. Let me see if I can download it and find out just how large a file it might be.

Ok, just downloaded it and it is an almost 17mb file...zipped. Not 5 like I had thought. I'm not sure if I can send an email that large but I would be glad to try. If not, I can put it on CD and drop it in the mail for you. But what I would do as it would be quicker is go to a local dealer in your area for Onkyo and have them log on to the support site (they'll know what this is), download the file and put it on a CD. It takes no time to download it on broadband.

    Avguytx-

Alright I'll give it a try. I'm assuming Circuit City would be able to do this as they sell Onkyo products, although not this player.

    thanks,

A guy over at the AVS forum downloaded the update then put it on a free server.

Here's the link for anyone who can use it.

Cool beans. See, I'm not smart enough to do that! Plus I doubt that Circuit City has access to that access site. At least from retail store level but who knows...I don't get paid for them anyway! :D

    Avguytx-

I'm having trouble updating my player.
I downloaded the firmware and burned it first to a cdr and then a dvd-r.
I did this because the display would not show "stop" with a cdr inside,
only the track and time. With the dvd-r it did display "stop", so I was able to begin the update process.
I followed the instructions to the letter, but each time after I press display for the final time, which should start the updating process, it just says
"please insert FRM data disc" Which is already inserted.
    Any suggestions?

I think I had it right the first time.
If you are used to the kind of customer service you receive here at POLK AUDIO,
you will be disappointed with Onkyo's version of customer service.

I gave you the 800 number in post #3.
