i'm looking at some new polk speakers, rti 10/12 or rti a7/a9, which all have both front and rear ports. from what i've read, if a speaker has a rear port, it need to be placed away from the wall otherwise the bass response suffers. is that true? if so, how far away from a wall does it need to be?

Most speakers, whether they are ported or not, should be placed away from the wall. There are no specific rules or formulas, so you'll have to experiment to determine the best placement.

    Quite the opposite actually --

Up against the wall, the bass usually "loads" and is usually louder and boomier

However the way the RT series is designed, they are designed to be close on walls if they need to be -- but as Brad said, they obviously perform better away from the wall as far as clarity, detail, and staging is concerned -- as well as bass performance.
